What to about an apple tree that will be delivered too soon?

I just got notice an apple tree I ordered is being shipped. It is still WINTER here. Can I pot it & keep it inside?  I have planted trees in April but not now. Any Ideas? Thanks!

I once put a couple of hazelnut bushes in a cold spot in the garage. They were barefoot and made it to planting time. I think they just need to be in a shaded spot with no heat so they don't start leafing out.

Thanks...the tree is bareroot...and I do want this tree. I will probably try it.
