On May 5, 1868, the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), a politically powerful organization of Union veterans led by Major General John A. Logan — issued General Orders No. 11 or the "Memorial Day Act." This issuance formally established "Memorial Day" as a Decoration Day on which the nation would remember its war dead and decorate their graves with flowers.
The Memorial Day Special is too much about people today, i.e., Armed Forces Medley. Not those who died in the past. It should be seen as a Helping Today's Veteran's Special. Songs I've never heard by performers I don't know. Should be songs that inspired the patriotism of those who died in WWII (405K+), the Korean War (36K+), Vietnam (58K+), and to lesser extent Afghanistan and Iraq (7K+).
The Special is trying to teach people about Wars instead of the soldiers who died and their families. Too much generals and admirals.
I am all for helping today's veterans. 30K+ suicides since 9/11. Did they tell you that? There should, be a Veteran's Day special with today's music and today's performers. Less than 6% of US population are veterans. It is not enough to thank veterans for their service. People should ask those who were in combat out or over for a cup of coffee, sit down, look them in the eye, and say, "Thank you for service. How are you doing?" And then be ready for a couple hours of listening.
