Just finished two hatches and now have brooders around my dining room and LOTS of peeping. In the past we've sold the chicks and then so many of the ones that we kept became hawk food. (We have a tractor now for the in-betweens.) I don't have a good ball park ratio for pullets to cockerels. About what can I expect?

First year with the Bantams... All Roosters.... 2nd year... All Roosters with the d'Anvers, got a couple of hens from the Ameraucana and d'Uccle bantams. Over all, Came out to 98% Roosters.. 3rd year... If i don't get any hens with the d'Anvers, I am going to give up on trying to raise them again. (All ready seeing Roosters. ) I need 98% Hens!!! In the past,, I would normally get about 50/50... some years, 70/50 in favor of the Hens. Then I move to this State. Maybe there is something in the water? LOL Keeping my fingers crossed you get at least a 50/50 split.

Hey guys, Not sure if it was at this site or the old one...But there was supposedly a study done in regards to egg shape and what sex the chick would be most of the time... Are any of ya'll seeing more males with the longer eggs and more females with the more rounded eggs? Just wondered if there is anything to it... Regards, Mari

Was more curious than anything else. The first batch, now three weeks old, are looking very roo heavy. Still a bit too early to officially call it though. The second batch are still adorable balls of fluff. Sigh. Interesting that you have such a high roo rate. I know one of the ladies who we sold chicks to said she had ended up with all roos but 2 out of a couple of dozen. I didn't really put much into it because she also swore the last hens she had laid several times a day and crowed. Smile and nod. Hmm (thinking out loud) how is gender decided? Temp it reaches? How old the egg is when incubated? Determined at fertilization? Things I ponder. Maybe I'll google it later. LOL.

I had a couple that were almost perfectly round this time. They never developed.

It's gotta be determined at fertilization since they have their X or Y DNA in there at that point. It seems like at different temps more female or more male chicks survive to hatching though.

I've been there to, the less eggs and the more they cost the bigger the rooster percentage.
