If a breeder (who is retiring) offers you a 5-7 year old dog who has given her last litter and is spayed, for a retirement home for the dog, are they talking free/gratis? I don't want to make any embarrassing assumptions.

Usually, but ask. If they know you well enough to offer you a dog, they shouldn't be offended by asking.

Thanks. What is the meaning of "Winner's bitch"? Seems an odd expression. Why not "Best bitch"?

LOL, because Best Bitch is a different class.
If I am remembering it right (and I may not be, and it's probably somewhere on the AKC website) each breed is divided into several classes, depending on how many dogs are showing. Usually at least Puppies, Dogs and Bitches, but they can be further separated, the goal is for no one class to be more than 10 dogs or so, to make judging easier. So, in that class, she won Best Bitch. That lets her move up to the next class, which is Winner's, as in, all the winners from Puppies, Dogs, etc. if she wins that, she is then Winner's Bitch, and can go on to the Best of Breed (sometimes the same class, depending on show size), and from there to Best in Show.
I may be leaving out a step somewhere, but it's been years and years since I've concerned myself with it and doubtless there is someone around here active in the show world who can explain better.

I see. That makes sense. Semi-finals, really. So best bitch of each breed, then best bitch regardless of breed. THanks for the clarification.
