She said it was okay to use 10 pints of canned tomatoes we found dated 2010. They were under a stack of canning jars we was looking to get ready to use this year. Theres also 3 qts. of peas with them.
I said better safe than sorry and throw them out.
She said the tops were sealed, they looked good, and if they smelled good, she was gonna use them. I said "famous last words"...why did I have to say that?
Anyway, now I ask you. Any advice?

I think lots of people use their canned goods from several year's back. I'm eating peaches right now from 4 years ago. The nutritional content might have gone down, but the "safety" is still fine. If the lids are sealed tight I'd make some chili and eat up.

One of my favorite websites is, http://www.stilltasty.com It has reliable info on the shelf (or fridge or freezer) on almost any food item you can think of. It says commercially canned vegetables are good for 2 to 5 years. ( and probably longer) Hope this helps and will give you assurance if there is a next time. ☺

Only 2010? We've got some pickles from the 1980s which are almost as good as when canned. Only difference is darker color. A lot of my tomato propucts are from the late '90s. As long as the seal is intact, and what's in the jar looks like what it is supposed to look like, it's food.

I would have used them if they looked and smelled ok.

Thanks everbody, I feel better about using them now. We usually eat every thing up in a year or two at the most, and I just never thought about having 5 year old stuff on hand. The seals are all good, and they look good too, the pantry was dark all the time and it don't get too hot in there either is why She insisted they were still good.
That's a good website Stef , thankyou.
