I watch them for laughs. Some mistakes I've found can be very Bad.
Was watching the Older Woman showing the Girls how to Tan Deer Hide. Yes soak it in Wood Ash and Water to help loosen the Hair. But one of the Girls used her Hands to push the Hide on into the water.
I found the Lye in Wood Ash is very Dangerous. One time I had it take all the Skin and Meat off all my Fingers. Took forever to heal.

If you have vinegar handy, it will neutralize that lye. I doubt they do, though. You never go out of your way to stick your hands in lye - that's just DUMB!
I know the show starts up again tonight...it's like a train wreck, where you know you shouldn't look, but seem to have the need to check it out anyway. The whole show is fake, fake, fake! They have a history of scamming people, trashing homes, and I can't wait to see what the Alaska State Troopers want with Ami...I'm sure it will be portrayed much differently on the show than on the police reports I've seen. <insert rolling eyes smilie here>
There are actually a few of the Alaska shows I really enjoy watching, since it's an area I find beautiful and I know that I'll likely never live there. Too cold and dark in the winter, too buggy in the summer, but it appeals to me on a visual level. Do you watch Alaska, The Last Frontier, Yukon Men, or Life Below Zero, @rockpile?

Actually, it's best to flush the area with running water. Vinegar causes a further exothermic reaction. Yeah, it should work in theory, but you want to get that stuff washed off with clear water - FAST!

@pony, I always heard to rinse with vinegar and then running water. Hate to think I've been doing it wrong all these years - yikes! I always had vinegar standing by when I made soap - never had to use it, though.

I really enjoy Deadliest Catch, Swamp People I don't really know why other than I have Family down there, use to live there and enjoy the area. There is one show I like to catch where these two young Men go out, learning to make it on their own.
Years ago when they had Homesteading up there me and my wife seriously considered it. Closes we came to it was finding property in middle of nowhere, cutting brush, putting up a shelter and living in an area no one in there right mind would try. Found we made improvements and lived there it didn't take long for others to move in. It was never the same. What really changed it was when others decided we needed Electricity, if we wanted it or not. We enjoyed it so much, knowing we could live there with out Electricity, no Generator, no Solar, no Electric at all.

Alaska in '83 then each person could Homestead 5 acres apiece. We was thinking of the Fairbanks area. We didn't try it, we made do with Homesteading in the Ozarks, not true Homesteading considering we bought our property but there was nothing there and no way to get equipment in at that time. Cleared and built our Shelter. Lived with nothing Modern as far as Electric, Running Water, did have Chain Saw, Coleman Lanterns and two Pickups.
Oh before we had spent a year in a Tent, not because we had to but because it was so different and we enjoyed it. We did have a House in town.

manygoatsnmore, @pony is correct about flushing with water. It's my biggest peeve on soaping sites when folks are adamant about using vinegar for lye burns. Just think about what happens when you pour vinegar on a weak base like baking soda. That reaction intensifies when vinegar is added to a stronger base like lye.

I haven't watched the new stuff yet - it's recorded, just haven't gotten to it. My husband and I shake our heads a lot, laugh constantly - and yet still watch Alaskan Bush People. It's light entertainment in that if we think for more than a second about many things we see on that show, we'd constantly be saying "no way that could be real because...".
Despite my protests that "I hate tv, and especially reality shows" I do like Life Below Zero, Alaska The Last Frontier, and my latest addiction - Dead End Express. Yikes. I do watch a lot of tv these days - I'll blame it on the rain.

susannah, I watch way too much TV - it's my vice of choice, lol. I like the new Dead End Express show so far, too. I really like the Hailstones on Life Below Zero. Agnes is awesome! The new episodes of ABP - first one was just a rerun form last season with a few new clips. If you're limited on watching time, just skip to the 2nd episode. I won't post any spoilers.

I think that family's dominoes are missing a dot. That about sums it up, lol. I have done some research and it appears the family has a very long history of scamming people, etc, and the behaviors exhibited on the show are a might bit odd (understatement, much?). I still find myself tuning in to see what the heck they are going to mess up next. <hangs head in shame> Kind of like those old Wilderness Family movies from the 70s - a visual how-NOT-to manual!

I find humor in thr various accents of the kids.

That's the part that cracks me up, each kid has a different accent. I watch for the same reason, it's just plain silly. I do wonder if they are all related?

One of the things I read while researching the family is that a speech pathologist says it's not so much an accent as a speech impediment, and that kids who have sinus infections that go untreated often talk a lot like the Brown kids.
