T. gondii is the most common parasite in developed nations, according to Schizophrenia Bulletin. The cat-carried parasite can infect any warm-blooded species, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates more than 60 million people in the U.S. may have it.
"Cat ownership in childhood has now been reported in three studies to be significantly more common in families in which the child is later diagnosed with schizophrenia or another serious mental illness."

I have had cats my whole life, so has my son and I have know many, many other's that have had cats their whole lives too.
No mental health issues with any of us.
toxoplasmosis, is known by most cat owners. Do don't want to get it, don't touch the cats manure with your hands and don't eat cat manure. Simple as that.
Am much more worried about the very nasty diseases and germs humans give to each other.

My grandfather smoked two packs of filterless cigarettes all his life and died at 83, from prostate cancer. My grandmother lived to be 99 and for some reason did not die from second hand smoke related causes.

Think they were much hardier stock back then. When my Grandmother on Mom's side passed away, she was 110. Women on that side, are very long lived.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but that was funny:-) There are so many bad things out there that a simple hand shake can pass along, now THAT'S scary stuff.

I remember staying at a child care facility after school in first grade. When we played in the sand box we often found cat stools.
Also, when I plant in the garden I am not sure of what I have touched.

There are so many vectors for toxoplasmosis I'm just not going to worry about cats.
I'll just teach my kids to wash their hands. That works for all of it.
