I got 15 pounds of past-their-prime potatoes from our local convenience store (for free) last week, boiled most of them up, and fed them to my chickens over the past few days. This morning I found the last 5 uncooked potatoes sitting on the kitchen counter and decided to cook and feed them to get them out of the house before they went bad.
Five potatoes divided amongst 26 chickens is barely a tease, lol, so I decided to boil a few dozen extra eggs at the same time. While that was all on the stove I rummaged in the cupboard and found a couple of heels of bread from last week's loaf, so in they went. The meal still seemed to be lacking a bit, so I went out to the yard and foraged a huge pot of stinging nettles and a bit of comfrey. After chopping them all up, I added the greens to the pot for a few minutes, just long enough to wilt them. Finally, after letting it all cool for a bit, I added just enough layer mash to soak up the "broth", mashed up the boiled eggs, and had a meal ready to serve. On my way to the coop I picked a handful of marigold flowers to add as a garnish, lol.
The chickens LOVED it.
I don't normally cook for my flock (during the summer anyway- in the winter they get lots of hot meals), but it was worth it today just to see how they went after the food. um, maybe I am just easily amused, but I enjoyed the spectacle!
