What a morning! At 5:30 am DH and I were awakened by a very loud crow! I've only kept hens and only 3-5 at a time,at that.
It was an odd crow….not like a “real” rooster, but all my 95% sure my two 12 week old chicks were girls flew out the window.(where the sound came IN from-haha).I dressed and went right outside to sit on the porch and see if I could spy the “culprit”. Nope.Did it 3 times Before I got out there, but not again. I heard two roosters at various different distances that I hear often and wondered if the crow-call was in response to them? The closest is about 15 yards away through the ends of two small properties. Our 4 yr old hen was standing upright on her perch and the two young ones hadn’t seemed to even come down from the coop loft to their run area yet at all (still separate but through a mesh to the older hen). I knew the crow was from the open air,not inside the loft, so I wondered if one of them came down and back up again? I calmed myself by reviewing that the sound that came in the open bedroom window was LOUD and I went online and researched hens crowing. A hugely populated Chicken Forum had the question of crowing hens on there about 5 times.I loved the funny answers, and Yes,it’s rare, but happens under certain circumstances. Our oldest hen Fit all the criteria and I heaved a sigh of relief! Sometimes hens with no rooster will crow. Sometimes hens that know they are the “leader” of a flock(well,we have 3 but she is the oldest and watches the newbies every day through wire) and have no rooster will crow. The sound was loud but not fluid like a real rooster and very short…it was an Err—Err—Err!!! Two people online said their hen-crows sounded like a “strangled rooster” and I just laughed because that was IT. that strangled sound Was what we heard. My 12 week olds have no red on their short combs yet and have never “talked” at full volume, and I was Soooo sure they were both girls .After my shock and research I’m fairly content again that they are Still girls. WHEW!
Has anyone else heard a hen let out a crow?
