I'm considering breeding one of my does to her half sibling. I figure they each are 50% the dam, but have different sires. Also they are both polled, which would slightly up my odds on polled kids, but may or may not also up my chances on hermaphrodite kids.
In all the years I've been breeding goats I've only gotten a hermaphrodite once that I know of. It was off a polled to horned breeding, but the dam was the same.
Thoughts/opinions?

Breed the best and eat the rest. You can't really go wrong as long as you are willing to cull the mistakes

All the best breeders do it....it's how we get the show-stoppers of tomorrow.
But I agree with BFF and like mygoat (from that 'other' place) says in her hashline:
"Breed the best and eat the rest".

You stand about the same odds if you line breed as if you do totally unrelated breeding.
Remember: If it works, it's linebreeding. If it doesn't work, it's inbreeding. Either way, you get more breeders or you get food.

Thanks, that's what I think. They are both off my best line. And I think I'd rather use him than another off my not best line, or go looking for another buck. I'm not really sure why it took me so long to think of it. I'm glad he's still in the field.
