I told hubby last week since I have Good Friday off, I was heading to the feed store. Why? To get some chicks! Had a few old hens die last year and a raccoon killed 3. Feed store gets in a big selection for Easter, including ducks, turkeys, guineas and pheasants. Along with at least 6 chicken breeds.
He assured me I had enough. Then asked me today what I was getting. Lol!

mamahen--giggle for your last line!
I only keep 3 or 4 hens and I had the same experience a few weeks ago. Great fox proof and baby coon proof coop fencing for 6 years(we'd seen both out there and let the dogs scare them off) but a Big smart adult coon got 2 of my 3 hens a couple of weeks ago! He scared em into panic and they jammed themselves into corners and he seemed to have grabbed them and pulled their heads and neck through the wire with his Long arms so he could kill and eat. ARGHHH. Sorry that was gruesome friends, but beginners need to understand what can happen with raccoons!!! messy predators
Well, now I have two little peepers in a box in my "office/art" room making that adorable twitter songbird noise they talk with at first. Very soon the true Chirping will start! That sound is uplifing to me too, just like Spring, and I'm never "bothered" by it. I get to have them inside for a few weeks and with the weather warming up they should be fine in the revised coop with MESH over the run's fencing.....sigh.... once they feather out enough.

I do love the sound of contented little chicks. One of my hens went broody a few days ago, so it won't be long before she's strutting around the yard with babies (I hope).

My two silkies have just started laying again so I know they will go broody any minute and I'll give them a bunch of my Icelandic eggs to set. Truly folks, if you don't want to have to mess with incubating eggs then I suggest you get some silky hens. They're brooding machines and terrific mama's

I absolutely love their little voices:-) I especially love the first attempt at a crow from baby roosters! It just cracks me up to no end to hear a little no bit of a rooster chick try crowing!
