There is a nice little cow in the herd that I milk who may be in need of a new home at some point. Nothing wrong with her except she doesn't make as much milk as a Holstein should. She's in her second lactation now, and it seems she peaks at around 75-80 lbs., and gives around 60 lbs. most of the time. That's not really enough to make the cut in this herd, and I'm worried my boss may decide to cull her. (With milk prices down, he's been culling pretty hard this year.) She's a very small cow, like a Jersey-sized Holstein (which may explain her production). Mostly white, with a pretty face and very sweet temperament. Very calm, good-natured, friendly cow. Never been lame, never had mastitis, nice bag, no calving issues ...not a thing wrong with her. She just tested pregnant to an early March A.I. breeding (the first breeding since she had her last calf), so she's due to calve around Christmastime. She's located in SW PA, close to zip code 15050. I'd take her in a heartbeat, but I have four already, and one on the way! Cull prices have been running high, around $1,500, but she's small so it's possible my boss might let her go a bit cheaper. LMK if you're interested! Oh, her name is Henrietta.

I hope she finds a family. She is so young. 60 Lbs isn't low production, that would fill an Olympic swimming pool.

Well, she milks like a Jersey in more ways than one ... I checked the DHI report tonight, and her butterfat tested at 4.9! My boss likes those high component girls, so she may get to stay after all. (I made sure to let him know about it.) But I'd still like to have something lined up for her in case she washes out, so if you're in the market for a cow, LMK, OK?

You are doing a good thing to go to bat for those girls, WG.

So what's the update on the cow?
Is she staying on or still looking for a new home?

Boss hasn't said anything recently about culling her! I asked him to let me know if he decides to sell her. He's good about that -- I've purchased or found homes for five culls from his herd so far. If anyone is interested, please LMK ... I'd like to have something lined up for her in case she gets the axe.

I so terribly want a family milk cow. I'm afraid this girl Is too far for us and not sure the timing is right. Thanks for caring for her.

She might be OK ... she made 70# on the last test, which is in safe range, especially since she's bred back! It was really hot in June when the tester was here, which may have knocked her production down a bit. Numb met her today when we stopped at the farm to pick up feed for our cows. I was, like, "This is Henrietta. You two might as well get acquainted, as it's possible she'll be living out her old age in our backyard."

Just wanted to update this thread to say that Henrietta calved on Sunday night! Another heifer calf ... her third. She was the first cow in the parlor the past two nights, and looks really good. I hear the calf is doing well also. Her production is coming up nicely, so she should be safe for awhile. *whew*
