I was trimming hooves today, what a mess. The one wether had really overgrown hooves. Till I got done I was bleeding and he was too. As I went to trim a bit off the toe he went ballistic, I jumped and cut too deep and stuck myself in the hand. He bled pretty good, I'm trying to put pressure on the hoof slapping baking soda on it (the only powder I could grab fast) and he's dancing like the devil. It's stopped bleeding now, but I can tell it hurts him. What else should I do - should I give him a tetanus shot? I have koppertox I can put on the hoof if he'll let me near him. Tetanus shot will have to wait until DH gets home and can hold him for me.

Sorry no one responded. How is he? His foot should be fine. I think we have all trimmed too deeply at times. I use to keep cornstarch with my trimmers for just that. I need to start doing that again. I wld kopertox the hoof and if you hadn't given CD&T vaccine this year give him a dose. Won't hurt anything.

He seems to walk fine on the foot, unless he sees me watching him, then he's suddenly limping and lame. Once he can't see me then he walks near normal, maybe a slight limp. Everyone is due for cdt in Sept., but I'll dose him this weekend. I bought a bottle of blood stop and it now is in the barn where I can grab it quickly.

Are you up to date on your tetanus shot? I had a friend that got cut while trimming hooves & ended up with tetanus herself. The goat should be fine. No different than if you cut your own nail too short. Painful for a little while until it grows back out.

CD&T vaccine is for long term immunity What is needed as a "booster" for injuries is Tetanus Antitoxinwww.drugs.com/vet/tetanus-antitoxin.htmlIf the wound is still open it can treated with an antiseptic and then be wrapped with gauze to help keep out dirt

I got him the antitoxin. Hoof looks to be healed up as best that I can see with him jumping around. I myself am up to date on my tetanus. About 2 years ago stuck myself on a piece of rusty wire. Just had an interesting thought - can humans use cdt and the antitoxin? Not from a "I'm too cheap to go to the ER" position, but from a SHTF event.

The anti toxin is the same thing I'd forego the vaccine
