Leaving in a little more than a week, for OR. Have a cabin on a creek, kinda mid state, 'bout 70 mi N. of Crater Lake. Besides visiting that, waht else should we do? I'd like to drive the route along the river W. of The Dalles, hope we can do that.
Taking a week to get there, we're going to see some sights in S. ID on the way. Then we'll take about 10 days coming home & go thru CA to see the Nat'l Parks.
We're a little bit limited b/c our sweetie-"Honey" is 15 & very arthritic so can't walk too far w/us. Plus there's lots of places doggies can't go.
Apprecialte any suggestions!
Patty

Take I84 Idaho to LaGrande, Pendleton and The Dalles, then south to the painted desert. Dog friendly. Beautiful country. We just went to Baker City yesterday and out to Sumpter to see the Dredge, no walking really. Bend is nice. Diamond lake, NW of Crater lake. We are at Wallowa Lake now, 70 miles from LaGrande, far NE Oregon....James www.oregonstateparks.org/index.cfm?do=parkPage.dsp_parkPage&parkId=174

It's hot as blazes out here now so be prepared and have a fun safe trip. With Honey, this is all that comes to mind right now. There are lots of parks and things south of Portland on I-5 offshoot highways, but I don't remember much about them. Silver Falls east of Salem was nice but I was there 25 years ago! Never know about changes! The Columbia River route to Portland when you hit The Gorge(from the Dalles)string of waterfalls is really pretty. If you come south from Portland on I-5 after that (not the coast),Or decide not to go north, then off I-5 at Grants Pass is The Redwood Highway south that ends up on the Calif coast at Crescent City. After the town of O'Brien (blink and you miss it,it's a gas station, mini store and RV park) and then the Calif fruit and veggie "inspection" pause happens, then it turns small and twisty . Only an hour or less down from there tho- and the bottom end has the Huge redwoods on both sides,a park and other turnouts amongst the awesome trees. The doggie might be OK at least for a break in the shade where you park and the nature walks are as short as you want to make them from the side turn-out parking(if available!)(if no turn outs the Park is there). It is a refreshing shady highway in the giant trees for a few miles before it ends. Beaches are OK for dogs on a leash unless posted otherwise too and some turnouts are easy and you can see access from the road.Plus a break on the coast will be cooler! 75 miles south from Crescent City you cut back over to Redding, back to I-5 and on to the inland Calif parks. You'd miss a close-up of Mt Shasta that route,so it all depends on what you've seen before or want to see for sure. Again have a great trip.Let us know what your route was! -hobby-

Hey jwal10- I lived up on the foot of the mountain for 9 years. If you shore fish the best spot was(15 years ago)---coming from town: pass the end and look for the gravel road (used to only have one end, don't know these days) with the bushes and trails to the lake edge Before the open turn outs.A good old bobber with 4 a foot lead and a dangling worm and dab of light green power bait on a trout hook got me dinner many a time. I cast as far as I could out deep, let it drift until it got close enough I thought it might get hung up then cast again. I even got a 14 inch kokanee but it was a blustery cool day That time. Got the smaller ones along with the trout every 3 trips out or so. Can only remember being skunked 5 or 6 times total with low water and no breeze over all those years.

We'll be there 2 wks so should be able to take a day trip up there. Go thru Bend on our way to the cabin in Crescent Lake, so looked up a 'wallyworld' there to stop for groceries. And been reading all the 'guides' I got in the mail...

Baker City has a nice museum, you can see the old Oregon trail there. Pendleton is interesting, especially Pendleton underground, an area of the city the Chinese railroad laborers lived in. I'm not sure when the Pendleton roundup is but you might enjoy the rodeo.

Patty, I'm so jealous. Y'all always go to the neatest places. How do you go about finding a cabin every summer? Do you look on the internet or get referrals from friends? Do you have family there? We were hoping to take a bike trip to Michigan later in the summer, but I fell while climbing into a calf stall, and had to have surgery on my shoulder. (FYI--I did not fall on the calf and I did not drop the bottle of milk!) We might have to choose a destination a little closer to home.

Nette- We have a family reunion in the Adirondacks every other summr-DH's family. So I search the internet, usually by 'pet friendly'. It takes days. sometimes weeks to find something, since we are retired & not wealthy. But its waht we decided we wanted to make happen in retirement. I'm so sorry about you having to have surgery. That can be such a setback. Prayers & good thoughts for all to be healed. And congrats on not hurting the calf Dh is pretty insistant about being on a lake but we'll just be in this creek cabin 2 wks so he's 'roughin' it'. Ha. Spent 2 wks in a CO cabin 2 yrs ago that was only 256 sq ft...cozy huh. We'll do 'bout anything to get outta this TX summer heat. Been so lucky so far, don't think its been over 95 yet. I'm really excited about OR!

Hi Patty! Well, it has been 105 rather regularly this year starting a month early in June... I don't consider the normal 80s as hot anymore either! Wallow Lake is off the major roads but seeing that area,if you can overnight, really is worth it for a lake hang out sometime for ya! Looking forward to hearing more about your adventure. We never go anywhere anymore and I sure miss road trips and especially camping and fishing. We moved here to make things easier for aging but I miss wilderness and no traffic like eastern Oregon has all the time...

My dad lived there as a small boy for a time. I was fortunate enough to find a gentleman in town that had lived there all his life, and was able to direct me to the house my dad and his family had lived in there. It was pretty special to be able to see that the old house was now being renovated and had a swing in the side yard. It is a house meant for a family. I've driven the Smith River Canyon on the way to the Redwoods. Fantastic scenery, beautiful green water. The Oregon Caves are a "cool" stop - it's hot out here this year. If you end up coming north through the Columbia River Gorge, you might consider spending a day seeing Mt St Helens - you can do it in a day from Portland.
