I don't know about other places, but around here the wasps are worse than they have been in years. I don't mean hornets in the big football shaped nests or yellow jackets in the ground, I'm talking about wasps that build small round nest. They are everywhere on our farm. Knocked down 6 different nest today alone in the barn, 4 in the goat shed and 3 more in the chicken house. I have gone thru more cans of wasp spray this year than ever. Been stung more times than I can count. I try to keep them cleaned out because of the grand kids. Don't know why they are so bad this year.
How are they around your place?

Always bad here in north FL. Even on warm days in January they will come out. I read something recently that the more you are stung the more likely you are to have an allergic reaction so be careful!

We had a rush on wood bees this year, but not so much with the mudd wasp, wood bees the only way to get them to leave is spray the wood that they seem to like to drill into with WD-40 it works like a charm

It won't stain like oil and it's what professionals use www.pest-control.com/bees/bee-season/boric-acid-bee-control/

Last year, wasps were off the charts bad in these parts. Every gate, every panel had them. I suffered multiple stings in one day from different nests when I was moving cows into the corral last year.
This year, they are not bad.

They're more noticeable around here too this year. Sprayed 3 nests in the machine shed, 2 in the wood shed yesterday. It seems like every time I get stung my reaction is worse. Last year one got me just to the side of my right eye, I swelled up till I looked like the Elephant Man. I'm thinking it's time to get an epipen (sp).

The yellow hornets are thick around here this year too. I haven't seen any Yellow Jackets yet.
I wonder if it's because we are just coming out of a 4-year drought in this area?

Last year the wasps were everywhere, but this year they must have all gone to your place, Even the usual nest building places are nest free. Blessings, Kat

I thought it was going to be a bad year for wasps, because we saw quite a few of them very early in the season. Lately we've hardly seen any at all. Now, I don't know if that means they're just hiding out and waiting to surprise us, if they're waiting for August and then they'll come out in force, or what. But we check the shed roof line every day (which is their absolute favorite area for building nests) and the garage eaves (second favorite nesting site) - and so far we've found nothing.
I am not complaining, mind you. But I'm not ready to say it looks like a mild wasp year because putting that to print would be to totally tempt fate - and bring the wasps out of wherever it is they've been hiding.

We have been trapping the queens early in the year and it has worked pretty well- until the last week! For some reason this hot weather has really increased their numbers. They haven't been too aggressive, yet.

Yeah, I picked up a rock in the garden yesterday, and a paper wasp was busily building a nest.
I chumped out, and let Nick take care of it. <hanging head in shame>

I'm seeing a lot of wasps too, the big red ones. One stung me last Sunday and it's still not completely healed. It became very swollen, red, and very hot to the touch. It's getting a little better the last couple of days but it was driving me crazy for a few days there. Kept benadryl cream on it and ice packs. I keep spraying with a foam long distance wasp spray where they are going up into the eaves, but I know I can't get to the nests. I'm just trying to watch two or three times a day and when I see one or two coming or going, I spray them. Also found them inside the horizontal pipe used to make my clothesline T's. Maybe I can decrease their numbers by attrition, just a few every day.
