Today I am making lotions and butters. Do you have a favorite recipe you like to use? I find that making my own lotions is really satisfying, and quite creative as a hobby. I rarely sell the lotions, although I may give some out as gifts from time to time. Personally I find that knowing what I put in a lotion and why all the ingredients are in it is so cool. BrambleBerry now has a great section on lotion making, and youtube videos by the soap queen ( I think that her name is Anne Marie.) Amazing and so helpful for newbies. I'm not that possessive about my recipes so I will post a few here.
Amazing Shea Body Butter ( A really big batch, but can be scaled down. If I remember correctly, you should have a 60/40 ratio of butters to oils for body butter.)
21 oz shea 9 oz mango 1 1/4 oz jojoba 1 oz emu oil 8 oz sunflower
Add vit e or a tiny bit of fragrance or essential oils such as rosemary or tea trea. Gently melt these together, and the whip for 6-10 minutes, bottle in sterile containers. This is a great seller, by the way. Back when I did craft shows this sold and made money for us.
I have never found a super favorite lotion recipe but I'm going to try Anne Marie's basic lotion today minus the stearic acid, which I find myself out of. I will probably add a little glycerin to it for some extra humectrant power.
This is her recipe as found on BrambleBerry.
18 oz distilled water 1.2 oz shea butter 1.7 sweet almond oil 1 oz avacado oil 1.2 emulsyfying wax 1 oz stearic acid .2 phenopip .1 fragrance
If you have not made lotions before it's helpful to look at a few tutorials and Anne Marie makes several lotions on youtube. She explains every step and gives you an option for not using preservatives, and well as explains why you should, in a very non judgemental way- which is so kind. ~Jo

I like a simple lotion recipe (not listed on my page) of
8% sweet almond oil 8% fractionated coconut oil
3% stearic acid 4% emulsifying wax
74% aloe vera juice 3% glycerin
To this total add
.5% germall plus (preservative)
.5% dimethicone (gives lotion a non-greasy feeling)
The scent of the aloe juice comes through so you don't need to add fragrance

That looks like a very nice recipe, Cindi. So here is what I did for my two batches of lotion. This made almost 4 pints.
First of all I changed the oz to grams. Grams are more accurate on most scales. (28 grams= 1 oz)
510 gr distilled water 10 gr glycerin
34 gr shea butter 28 sweet almond oil 20 gr of good oils for your skin. I used aloe vera oil, rosehip, evening primrose and argon. It's about 5 grams each. 1 oz grapeseed oil 39 gr of emulsyfying wax. (I have the soft and silky right now.) 28 gr of stearic acid could also be used here. It's in the original recipe, but I left it out because I don't have any.
6 grams of Otiphen Plus, added with the water ingredients at about 125 degrees.
6 400 iu capsules of vit e, and about 4-6 drops of essential oils of rosemary, tea tree, rose absolute, lavender and honey absolute. In the second batch I didn't use the honey absolute, but used a fragrance oil called Honey Bear instead. It has a sweet smell. Ylang,Ylang could also be used. These are both good for the skin and promote healing and they are antioxidents which help prevent rancidity- but they won't prevent mold or bacterial growth.
When you make the lotion, we add the water ingredients together and warm them slightly for about a 11/2 minutes in the microwave. Then the oils are melted gently in the same. The temps rarely go over 130*. The Otiphen Plus I added to the water ingredients. Some preservatives are added to either the water or the oils, and it's good to check on that.
A little bit of tapioca flour can be added if the lotion is more oily than you like. I did one batch with a 1/4 tsp and one without. I like them both. The stearic acid makes the lotion fluffier and I think creamier but it is actually quite nice without it, too.
This is a really nice basic lotion. ~ Jo

Love salves and lotions and love infusing oils. I make Rosemary Gladstone's lotion. It is divine. For the last year we have made our own deodorant as well. It works great and is SOOOOOO easy.

How did you do your deodorant? This is something I want to try, since I moved myself off of aluminum deodorants in January. I've been doing the bentonite clay detox about once a week, and just using soap which seems to be working perfectly fine. But the real test will be in the summer and after I have the baby. Hope that wasn't TMI...

I have made lotion bars--a harder form of lotion where you rub the bar on your skin. I have made lotion using a base...
I also make chest rub bars, muscle rub bars, bug no more bars, and headache relief bars.

Sure, I don't mind sharing. I market them to my dh's customers. He sells produce by delivering to offices and businesses in a fairly local area so I don't see ya'll as competition. I'll try to hunt up my recipe book (I keep all my recipes in a separate book for our business) and post it tomorrow afternoon.

No website yet, though it is something I'd like to do sooner rather than later. I do have a business fb page where I post our weekly delivery schedule and product list and often post pictures of various items. If you scroll back a good bit you can see pictures of my lotion bars, salts, sugar scrubs, and soaps. Roberts Family Produce is the fb name.
I will come back later today when things calm down, I promise, and post my bar recipes.

I make a comfrey tincture and ginger tincture- I use the comfrey to make a healing salve and use the ginger just to put a dropper full in tea or water to calm a upset belly- What kind of tinctures do you make? I love the idea of tinctures!
