We are trying to kill out some grasses and weeds out of a small area about 10'x10'. My husband has layed down black plastic. How long do you let that stay in place to get the vegetation killed? Thanking you in advance for your replies. Jean

I put mine down in the fall and leave it all winter. Doesn't help now, sorry.

Whoops. We were hoping that the sun would not only fry the vegetation but also roast the roots. Thanks for the input.

I think to kill the plants, the clear plastic might work better. The sun coming through the plastic heats up and will kill the plants.

Yes, it's clear plastic which is used to solarize soil and kill the roots. Black will heat up good but smothers more than cooks. Quack grass would think that it's on a tropical holiday!

We're using black plastic, we don't have the heat for clear to be any use, the weeds would love it, their own personal greenhouse. We're going with one year here, will take the roots from the nettles and thistles out as well.

I am sure that lack of sun will eventually kill everything, I would leave it for an entire season

It will depend on what type of vegetation you are trying to kill. A few weeks will kill the green above ground part but the roots may still survive. What do you plan to do with the area?

The location is in an area that we brought in black fill dirt to fill around the foundation from a newly built house. It did not get quick attention and we will put in some iris and fill in the rest with bark mulch and locate a bird feeder and waterer there. I don't think the grasses and weeds have really established themselves but thought we might just kill them out. Thanks for all the good information. Jean
