May mean squat to non horse people. I was reading a novel in which the hero rode off on his gelding and arrived on his mare. At the point in the book when he arrived, I said to myself "Wasn't he on a gelding?" And had page back to verify that such an important fact (to me anyway) was in error. Aha, I said to myself- the author didn't notice. I always felt sorry for a movie director who thought the general public too stupid to tell the sex of the animals in their films. To me it was incredible that such an obvious thing was palmed off on the public. A bad case of tunnel vision as most of the public can not see the difference and wouldn't care if they did. To them, chestnuts and bays are simply brown and all grays are white horses. I despair of a country whose population doesn't know what really matters. And thinks it's funny that you do.

Ah, a pet peeve of mine as well. The film people don't think we will notice the color change of a trusted mount on screen, or the gelding or mare that suddenly isn't one anymore:-) Really though, the handler of said horses should be intelligent enough to tell a director that we horse lovers WILL notice!
But then, I don know everything about boating, for instance, and have most probably said stupid things to people who love boating:-) I guess to each their own...

It makes me so irritated when the details are not correct or consistent I will just quit reading the book. If the author is so lazy they can't do research, I'm not going to reward them by reading or recommending their book!

But Francis the Talking Mule was a girl, despite the gravelly voiced Chill Wills.

An auction house near us frequently advertises that they will be selling "bred geldings". It about drove me crazy. These are long time horse people! I finally ask the head guy if he knew that was impossible. He got a big laugh from my question! Apparently all those real horse people KNOW that what will be selling are "gelded thoroughbreds". Never a limit to what I don't know. That woukd have been a surprise to me too.

Horse details that are wrong in books drive me crazy ... as do books that are set in areas I know very well and know the details of roads/buildings/terrain are wrong. If it's blatant enough, I will end up quitting a book I like otherwise. As others have said, if you don't know it at least do your research. Blue-eyed white Arabians, roan Suffolks, 18 hand Morgans .... AGGGGH!

Yesterday I read a book where they went on a cattle drive for dudes. They went 150 miles on their huge ranch, 2000 acres! No, they were not going in circles!
