Springerized is that a word Today the hubby and I cleaned the chicken coop from layers of winter mess. This is the only time I hate cleaning the coop...why oh why are chickens and ducks so messy? Oh well its cleaned and with warmer weather we can keep it clean. I'm sure we are not the only ones that just keep adding straw in the winter to keep it clean for the chickies. Now on to more enjoyable jobs around the farm.

It is a good feeling when that job is over isn't it?! Couple of weeks ago it was unusually warm here and I cleaned out from under the roost rack in one of my coops...(had to-the litter/mess was right under the rack!). Didn't have time to tackle the main area though. Course since then-had some cold weather-I didn't realize that most of the heat generated in the litter was coming from there-not the main area! Back in went the heat lamp-only for one night though...I don't usually clean my coops out (the ones that need it) until mid April or so...And yes-I am one of those that adds litter (I use pine shavings) as needed throughout the winter-more so when we have colder than norm winters like the last two! I wish I were completely done like you! Regards, Mari

Took a nice hot bath and let the body rest for a while. That is back breaking work for sure.
Good luck with finishing yours...I know you will be happy when it is done.

I wish I had a couple windows to open when I'm cleaning our coop. I am seriously thinking of using a droppings blanket this year. You hand a tarp or blanket under the roosts to the droppings drip right in. Then you unhook the blanket and slide the droppings into the compost pile. Then replace it. it sounds good, but I wonder.
Anyone else use one?

I have a long shallow door at the back of the coop, each month I flip it up and use a garden rake to pull the droppings and bedding out and add to compost pile, mixing it all together as I turn it. Then I add new straw and shredded paper....James

I hope the boys from the detention center will call saying they need some chores to do....in fact, I think I'll wait to clean out the stall the chickens have been in all winter, until they do call!
I moved my indoor chickens to their summer home in the coop last night. I have 3 hens that are just over 6 months old and they don't roost. I tried putting them up there last night, but they all three fell off. Hopefully, they will figure it out soon.

Cleaned all the straw and droppings from winter and put it in the garden. Hosed down every thing. Do it every spring. Fun fun fun. Eight wheelbarrow loads. Next the goat pens.

I think I'm glad it doesn't get cold enough to need to leave it in there here. mine all roost on top of the nest box. should get round to fixing it so they can't.. but always something else to do first.
