Laughed at Benny....he has fits with an old buff hen....she hides and takes off and has been taking off and he looks for her to no avail....he came in today to tell me he followed her out to the old greenhouse ..."she just took off like a shot when I left them out"....LOL....tonight he said he found where she is laying and found nine eggs, but he is going to leave her alone....I got all excited when I saw a big truck down at the café loaded with cages, and all kinds of chickens in them...going to a sale....and as a friend of mine walked by, I told him...."Look at those beauties" but he was not impressed...called the guy just an old FEATHER PEDDLER...Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.....

I recently tore down our old chicken house & converted another shed to the chicken house. My hens can now free range over the whole pasture. They used to have a fenced in yard. I would let them out in the evening for a couple of hours, but now have a new dog that likes to chase them. They have learned to stay inside the pasture fence & all is well. I love seeing them out scratching in the grass.

Seems like I have at least one hide a nest every year, Every so often a hen shows up leading some chicks. Always makes my day to see the little ones darting around.

Grannyg, can the hen cover nine? We had one hen that not only kept laying, she stole the other eggs and added them to her nest. None of them hatched. Mark the current eggs with a magic marker and remove any new ones.

Mark the current eggs with a magic marker and remove any new ones. Lol! Mine steal each other's eggs all the time! I have two Silkie hens sitting together in a corner of a stall in my barn (the mare stalled in that one is so aware of, and gentle about, those hens...I have no worries about them or chicks in that stall!). I check every other day to count eggs, and every single time each hen is sitting on a different number of eggs, but there are never MORE eggs than before! Haha! In my coop it is worse, I have the bulk of my hens in there sitting eggs in every nook, cranny, and laying box, and they all will go steal a clutch of eggs when that hen gets up to go eat or get a drink. Tonight I peeked in to make sure my Peahen was in for the night, and darned if she wasn't sitting on a tiny little Banty egg in one of the boxes. Sigh....
