With the warm temps and rain forecasted Iam ready to hit the woods and find some of these treasures. Spring turkey season and mushroom hunting are a favorite spring season event for me.

Sure hope we get some rain soon. Not looking for many morels till we do. Years ago I knew of some prime morel hunting grounds around Tuttle Creek lake. Even my garden isn't coming up. Hate to start irrigating now cause I can't keep that up all summer if the weather doesn't change. Saw a hen turkey yesterday, she just cleared my windshield by maybe 3 feet. That's too upclose and personal.

I grew up in northeast NE, 30 miles from the Mo river and that is one thing I have *really* missed since moving further west. It's just too dry out here to have much mushroom success. So enjoy some for me!

Wow. I haven't gone looking for morels in many years. And when I did, it was here - in the area I now live (again). Thanks for the reminder - I'd pretty much forgotten about them. It's too early now - still too cold, still snow on the ground in the woods - but I am definitely going out looking this year!

Couple years back we had a very wet spring. I found over 500 morels in the little 3 acre wood my home is in! Wish that would happen every year!

Last time I went searching for morels was Mother's Day 2002. Changed my life forever. Came home with 16 pounds or pure culinary delight. Also brought home 2 deer ticks. Found one right away. Found the second one a week later and it carried Lyme's. What happened next was covered almost daily on HT but those early posts were lost. That tiny little bugger took away my "fullback legs" and never gave them back. I sure miss those morels but not the Lyme's.

We have a morel festival in the area. They sell for $80 half pound.
My brother had lymes. Had a headache for a year and a half but has since fully recovered.

Hi Wally When I lived in one of two spots out in eastern Oregon my anticipated annual Spring gourmet meals were trout or kokanee from Wallowa Lake along with the morels I found and some wild greens.I Treasured getting those simple meals all by myself and now I have great memories! Lots of people and pollution out west compared to there(even in the woods) so I switched from gatherer to gardener.

I have not been out hunting morels, but I know how wonderful they taste!
Paquebot, I am sorry the tick took your leg strength, but glad it left your gardening smarts and willingness to share!

I know it is unlikely but I haven't given up hope that my dear friend will take me to her place and let me TRY to hunt mushrooms . My mobility is a stopping point for her but my mind is still willing .. Just once I want to be able to try dehydrating some ..

The kids took a walk yesterday and hit some of the likely spots, but did not see anything. I tell everyone it will be May, but they always get anxious!

The long thin walled ones we call "spikes" were frozen in water and used to make or add to soups. The more meaty types were fried or baked fresh and the excess frozen. Just take them out and nuke them and eat. They are not as good as fresh but still not bad. I think I still have a couple pkg of "froze in water" left, but then there are years like this one where I only found one grey and that was it for the season.
