Opinions please: My year old pup split her dew claw nail completely lengthwise exposing the quick and "meat" of the nail. It's clearly sore and a little bit swollen. She isn't limping or anything but does lick it some. Should I take her to the vet or will it heal on it's own as long as I keep it clean? TIA

I've been soaking it nightly but afraid I'm going to have to visit a vet. Getting very swollen. Going to call in the morning.

If you are going the vet route, have it removed. No more worries about getting it caught on anything again.

Ended up removing the nail. He did not want to remove the entire dewclaw. Hoping it grows back and all is well.

Removing the nail is a good idea, and you can go on and keep it good and short.
If it makes you feel better about it, I know that many show dog folks who if their dog needs anything that requires anesthesia, they have the vet take all the dog's nails down to 1/4 of an inch. The nail will grow back, but it takes a very, very long time for the quick to grow back, so the nails can be kept very short with very little effort on the part of the owner, and no risk of discomfort at all on the part of the dog. The dogs can do everything with their very short nails that they can do with the long ones, dig and everything.
It actually works out so well, that I think if my dogs ever need to go under for any reason, I'll also have it done. I've seen so many nail-related problems that it seems like the right thing to do.
So rest assured she'll be fine, and never miss it at all.
