Wow. Our local weekly paper,Illinois Valley News (in SW Oregon out of Cave Junction) had Quite a story in it!
Back in 1957 a hunter shot a huge buck with totally gnarly "cactus" points. That sort is not allowed in the record books;but I wonder why. They are amazing to look at! He got to it and saw it was in velvet which was illegal and he left it on the ground! sheesh.(I can't stand thinking about the waste). Well,he told a buddy who hiked out and got the rack a year later after it had been damaged by rodents on the tips, but not too badly. The rack went into storage or home display for decades and the granddaughter who lives here ended up with it. She's an avid horsewoman and endurance rider and needed money to go on a long ride in other states. When she sold it she got "a 5 figure check" !!! The collector is going to display it and take it to educational events. I think it's a fine thing that a wasted kill was ultimately preserved and will now be shared for lots of people to see. But also that's a LOT of money! What do folks have sitting around that are old and they take for granted? Anyhoo, that story today made my heart feel real good. I love treasures from the great outdoors! All I've got is some awesome eastern Oregon petrified wood and agate we found, only worth a couple of bucks per lb Now, but I do know it's approx value and stuff like that does eventually go up.

Most the time a Buck that has a rack like this has been injured. I didn't realize they couldn't be in record books.
