Woot! We even have a beekeeping forum here and it still has that new forum smell too!
How many other beeks are on the board and where are you located? I'm in North Arkansas with 9 colonies and hopefully growing this year. Allen

I was beegrowing on the other forum and I'm in the Illinois Valley of SW OREGON which is south of Grants Pass on the Redwood Highway. I have 3 top bar hives that made it through the winter and this is my third year as a beek......which means I don't have any "experience" yet, just lots of books, study and lots of luck with the choices I've made managing the little buzzers so far! he/he

I haven't had bees since 2013. They didn't make it through the 2013/2014 winter and with a broken ankle/leg that winter, I wasn't able to get new hives going in 2014
I picked up two 3# packages on Saturday and got them hived. Went out today (bee-autiful, sunny, warm day!) and released the queens.

I want to get bees so much. I was almost ready to take the plunge a few years ago but then hesitated with all the problems with CCD showing up. I need to connect with our County Extension office to see if they offer classes or anything since I only know what I have read. (in other words pretty much nothing).
It's on my list. I just don't want to be a poor beekeeper. They would be a wonderful addition to my market garden however.

Chickadee, I started by learning from books, but my 'girls' have taught me something new every year. They're the best teachers in the world. I'm sure folks here would be more than happy to help you. Just remember, if you want 3 opinions on beekeeping, ask 2 beeks!! In other words, there is no absolute one way to tend to your bees and your circumstances may be different than anyone elses.

chickadee, Check with your County Extension office and see if there is a Beekeepers club in your area, You can learn a lot from them and most offer beginner classes for little and often no cost.
Many times some of the members will have bees for sale too.

Thanks everyone! You are all so nice. I will look into it. I just need to get the courage to jump in and do it! I will try to find out if there is a local group first as suggested so I can learn the right way to do things. I love this place already.

I got mine last year after about five years of hankering (my grandfather was a beekeeper)... and it has been one of hte most rewarding things I have done, homesteading wise. I don't know much, being a sophomore, but I know one thing- there's no such thing as the one, right way in beekeeping! These girls are hard wired for survival, and there are many different ways that work for the people doing them. Yes, maybe you kill a colony or two the first year... that's why you can't just have one ! You'll never learn as much from others as by just observing, doing your hive inspections, and letting the bees be your teachers. And, of course, post in forums like this .

Hey folks,
I was wondering if there is any kind of 'service' provided for beekeeping. I'm in NE Illinois - bout 30 miles outside of Chgo. (60018 zip) I'm caretaker and secretary of an environmental organization there. Our group would like to facilitate several hives on the grounds (located in forest preserve). But I am adamant about knowing a little about what we are doing before making any investment or setting ourselves up for disappointment. There is a group in Chgo which installs and maintains the hives (for half the honey) - but they don't come out this far. I'm sure we can do it, but I think it's important we have a little guidance the first couple years. Any information anyone can provide or recommendations, please feel free to email me. osiris157 AT juno DOT com.
Thanks and good to see the old gang over here!

I'd love to have bees. I wanted it to happen this year, but isn't looking like it.
