Last year I started selling some of my crafts to make a little extra money, but I was confined to a small area in the basement. It was basically an old dining room table that was shoved up against the wall. Ideally I would like to have the room that we use as a workout room, but I can't get the weight machine out of there so I decided to work on my area and expand it so I could actually move around. I still have a lot more work to do including painting that dark paneling, but it's starting to take shape.
I started by taking some bookcases we had down there and turning them towards the other half of the room as a divider. This gives me an area that is approximately 10 ft x 10 ft, which I hope is plenty of room. Just ignore how wrinkled that sheet is hanging on the back of them, I was checking to see if it was large enough to hide the ugly backs. I'll be washing, drying and ironing it before I put it up there permanently. The plan is to use the bench for finished orders that are awaiting shipping or pickup.
The table was originally turned the other way with the long edge against the wall. This way I can easily work from either side so there's less wasted space. And I like that I don't have my back to the rest of the room. We stopped at Ikea this past weekend and picked up the rug. I wasn't planning on spending that much on a rug for down there, but I'm so happy my DH talked me into it. It's super thick and so much warmer than the ceramic tile, which I'm sure I'll appreciate this winter. The shelf on the wall is a cheap laminate shelf from Lowe's. I think it cost $7 for the shelf and $10 for the brackets. I could have spent less on the brackets, but I'd like it to be pretty as well as functional. It turned out that the brackets were a good decision because I was able to add a dowel rod across them to hold my tissue paper.
The cube shelving is holding most of my inventory. Since I've pretty much filled up the one with the larger cubes I'll probably need to buy another one soon since I keep seeing things I can personalize everytime I go to a store. The little closet area is where my water shut off valves are, but I decided to work around them and use it for my shipping supplies. I bought a short shower curtain rod and put it through the center of that huge roll of bubble wrap. Then I bought the cheapest rings I could to hold my gift bags. I'm thinking I might move the file cabinet out and slide it under the end of the table. This would give me room to add a couple of shelves in there to hold the shipping boxes and my gift boxes. Right now the gift boxes are stacked on the cube shelving taking up a lot of space. I'd prefer to have all my shipping and packaging stuff in the closet together.
I wish I would have taken before pictures so you could see how much I've gotten accomplished in there. Try to picture a basement storage area with boxes piled up everywhere and that will give you a pretty good idea. I'll to remember to update the post if y'all want to see it when I finally get it finished.
