We had a freeze a few nights ago. So I put the row cover on,which came up about ten feet short. When I checked the berries for damage, whoa, that freeze really nailed that last ten feet,I thought.Till I got to checking and found it was deer that had eaten them to the soil line. Better protect them folks. Not much else for the deer to eat now and anything green, lookout!!

Deer don't have front teeth on top and therefore have trouble eating anything off close to the ground. The deer may have been there but my money would be on rabbits. They'll eat the heart right out of a strawberry plant. I know!

Yup, probably nasty bunnies. Around here, deer like to destroy pole bean plants and my $50 Cortland apple tree. <sigh> I wish deer and rabbits read the books and newsletters outlining which plants will deter them, because they seem to favor the plants on those lists most of all.

Deer are browsers, not grazers. Cattle are also browsers but everyone refers to them as grazing when on pasture. Neither cattle nor deer can eat anything down to the ground. Think of the old range wars between sheep and cattle ranchers. Sheep can survive on what cattle leave behind. Nothing could survive after sheep.

We have a lot of deer, and the strawberries are fine, not been touched, there's no rabbits in this country, so lucky there.

Aalborg was as far north as I have been in Jutland during my 5 visits to your country. Loved being over there in late June when it seemed that every farm had a sign Jordbaer og Nye Kartofler. (That's strawberries and new potatoes.) Martin

I used to live about 30miles from Aalborg, I'm now over on the east coast, still just as far north though. I've never seen our deer, but lots of droppings, and I can see where they sleep under some fallen trees, lovely little nests they have. Trees are getting cleared on monday though.. unhappy deer! And yes a lot of people sell veg from the front gate, peas potatoes and strawberries are the common ones, and green onions (normal onions, red or white, but before the leaves turn)

They love the dandelion flowers here, but I think that's just desert as my oak trees had a massive drop of acorns this time...
