Just saw an ad from a farm in Va selling Zebu Cows. They are a small breed...from thousands of years ago and not a man made miniature breed. They never mentioned if they can be used to milk for a small family but suppose they could though. the place was ..Sunny Field Farms in Va. Anyone ever had this breed ??

I haven't had them but there are a lot of them in our area of Texas. Not sure what they use them for, but they are cute little things!

They are out there eating grass when all other breeds would be laid up under a shade tree...they are very heat tolerant, thrive in hot bug infested climates with humidity, and will make use of grass other cows won't. I had a few back years ago and sold them all when cattle prices went higher than I thought they ever would. My only foray into cattle raising. Never had to pull a calf, but I don't know about milking one. The cows were pretty wild natured, especially after calving, but then we didn't see them as pets. Mine were not that miniature either but I guess there are different types.

There are also something like 75 different breeds and each a little different. Some indeed are milked. I was surprised to find information saying that their beef qualities were poor. I remember a farm in this area that had them way back on the 1960s and big waiting list of beef customers. Never got a chance to see how good it was and that farm no longer in operation.

Their Qualities of tolerance to harsh environments cross breed well I would say.

Unless somebody went to the jungles of Asia and made an importation from the remaining wild stock, they most certainly are "man made". Under domestication, man is making the breeding selections, not mother nature. Zebu have been selectively bred with emphasis on different traits as they spread to different places, so surely there is a "milking strain". They are cute as can be, just hope disposition and meat quality has been improved since they left the jungle.
