I want to make rum cakes to give for the holidays and I've been looking at recipes online. I've never made one before so I'm looking for advice from the experts. Here's a typical recipe using a cake mix posted by Ree Drummond. I don't plan to use nuts on mine.

I remember the ladies making these when I was a kid but it seems like they would wrap the cake in a rum soaked cheesecloth and let it sit for several weeks before cutting into it. Does anybody else do that? Would I still poke the holes in it before wrapping it or just let the rum wrap soak in? I don't want it to get mushy from too much wet. Also, how long should I keep it wrapped?
I'm going to put these in my kids Christmas baskets that I give them when they're here for Thanksgiving. I thought if I made them on Tuesday, they'd be ready when the kids get back to their homes on Sunday or Monday after Thanksgiving. Or ... should I freeze them and let them thaw while the kids are on their way home?
I really want these to turn out yum-a-licious so all opinions are welcome!

Oh Yum!!!! Thanks for posting this calicokatie1. Great instructions and I simply must make it. Have to budget for the rum, but looks totally worth it. Will try a few practice runs before Christmas. I can see this becoming a regular in my repertoire.
