@wintrrwolf , I am so sorry. When things are back on an even keel maybe you can help us understand what feeding regimen you tried that you think contributed to these very sad circumstances. This last year for the first time I didn't give grain from June to September, didn't give hay either they had so much browse they weren't eating much of it. So many people have said that I was overfeeding my goats, that management wise I was spending too much on feed and minerals (replamin plus and loose goat minerals) that they shouldn't need all that during those months when natural growth is abundant. This is the first time I listened, and this is the first time I have lost babies. It makes my heart hurt that I didn't stand up for myself and my goats and tell them to stuff it.

@wintrrwolf , I am so sorry. As I am a newbie to goats, you speak to something I'm always debating in my head -- I have to learn from others because I didn't grow up with livestock of any kind. For goats especially, there are 100 points of view for everything, it seems. Thanks for sharing what you tried and why you think it didn't work. If it's of any comfort, sharing your experience will forever be a part of my decision making process and likely I'll be more confident standing up for what I think is best. There's no fixing the past - but you've contributed to protecting the future for your herd and mine. <<hugs>>

wintrrwolf, Don't take it too hard. I had a terrible season last year and I also think it was due to diet management. It's tricky getting it right it seems... I must have overdone the alfalfa and had a slew of monster sized kids that did not survive and nearly killed their mothers. The vet had to pull the last kid out of one mother with a chain for calves. This year I can only hope that cutting back on their feed will give me better results. Learning by experience is very, very hard when it comes to living creatures you really want to see thrive and do well. Unfortunately it's also the only way we really find out what works for us sometimes. Advice from others is often priceless, but no two environments or herd of animals is exactly the same.
