Just read, apple peels and cinnamon when dried are awful. I was planning on drying plain peels. What's your experiences?

I've never tried drying them. I used pear peelings and cores to make vinegar. I've read you can use any fruit peels and cores including apples to make vinegar.

When I make dried apple slices, I leave the peel on. I like the extra fiber, and less work. I'd never dry them plain though. It seems too much like saving and eating pencil shavings.

I never peeled my dried apple either. I like apple peel but only in moderation- like moderated by still being on the apple slice.

I have dried apple peels with cinnamon sugar on them and they are fine, they don't taste as good as dried apples but still good. I also take apple peels and some apple juice and puree and make apple leather

janisr Did you dry apple slices with peels on, sugar and cinnamon? Seems like drying would cause sugar and cinnamon taste to really intensify.

Well, this thread came a day too late. I just peeled the last of my apples to dry as that's the way I like to eat them. I was wondering what I could do with the peels. Ended up putting them in the compost pile.
Next time I'll try pureeing them for apple leather. Thanks for the idea.

I use them to make vinegar and apple jelly. We also have some frozen to feed the rabbits this winter as a special treat.

My chickens love apple peels! That's what I do with mine.

You can boil them in water, then strain to make a really delicious apple water. It isn't quite like apple juice, but tastes more like store bought vitamin water. That is what I do with mine.

sss3, sorry for the delay in responding I peel my apples to dry, and I have left over peels when I can apples, applesauce, apple butter and such. Besides drying apple peels with cinnamon and sugar ( I don't put a lot of spices on the peels so it isn't to strong) you can also grind the peels after they are dried and sprinkle the ground peels on oatmeal, meat and different things

How do you all make vinegar out of apple peels?
If I remember right, it starts out as a winey smell, then goes to vinegar, it takes a few months. I used a bucket with a towel over the top and I tied string around the towel. This keeps it free from fruit flies and molds.
