Ok I live next to a Cold Water River. If Conservation Departments Stocks like they should there is Rainbow Trout. Around here have Goggle Eye, Smallmouth Bass and Suckers.
Yesterday I went down there to catch Trout. Seen several up by a spring had Buckets, usually means they are fishing for Goggle Eye. I'm fishing next to a Guy. I mention to him about them fishing for Goggle Eye. He says oh that is going to change. What are you talking about? Oh they are going to put length limits on them. Not here it is on other streams. Oh it is coming here and I'm all for it. What he didn't mention is they are also talking about putting a 1 fish Limit on Smallmouth.
Caught one Rainbow. Went on up river talking with people. There was an Older Oriental Woman that I enjoy talking with. She asked if I wanted to see her Big Fish? Yes. She pulled her stringer up. Had two nice Smallmouth and 3 Rainbows. Mentioned the Bass to another Guy, he told me I should have busted her up side the Head for keeping them. Just because he don't feel anyone should keep Smallmouth.
Ok so many say anymore no one needs to hunt or fish for meat. All my life we have hunted and fished for the bulk of our meat. Never passed on much, Coon, Groundhog, Turtle and Carp. Redhorse Sucker has to be the best eating fish there is.
I don't have to answers just know more people are going to look more to the Grocery Stores for their Food and look down on those that don't.

Are the Smallmouth a native population or are they stocked as well? They are native. Right here by the house all we have that are native because the water is so cold is Smallmouth, Goggle Eye and Suckers, which Redhorse is my favorite but during Winter everyone Gigs them at night.
Thing is the Conservation Department Stock Rainbow Trout mainly Spring and Summer to keep Tourist Happy. Thing is the state also turned Otters lose which kill so many fish just for the fun of it.
Go on down several miles start catching Crappie, Largemouth Bass and a few Channel Catfish.

Otters would explain things. When I was a kid my Granddad would take me up north for brookies. Small, ice-cold stream running through a cedar swamp, couldn't ask for a more beautiful spot to fish. I landed one of the biggest one's I'd ever caught, whacked it in the head and laid it on my creel. Went back to fishing and here comes a mink down the bank, got within five feet of me. Looks at the fish, looks at me, grabs the fish and disappears down a hole with it. Needless to say after that they went IN the creel.

One time I was fishing a holes caught two Rainbows. All of sudden fish quit biting and I see them floating by belly up. Then seen 4 Otters.
They are Trapped though. Seen a Guy with days Catch had Boat load of Otters, Beaver and Muskrats from what I seen.
