Feverfew is said to be a 'cure' for migraines. The problem with Feverfew is that it causes a sensitivity to sunlight. That said, the ONLY casualties related to feverfew have been 'sheep', who consumed the plant in abundance then spent a lots of time in the sun. CORRECTION: St. John's Wort causes sensativity to sunlight not feverfew. It's very easy to grow and reproduces wonderfully - almost invasive but easy to pull out and control. Seeds are the dried flowers. It's in the Chrysanthemum family. Pretty plant about 12 inches tall and lots of cute daisy-type flowers. www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/f/feverf10.htmlI've tried a cup of it once - very bitter. And I don't get migraines, so....It's just a garden plant for me.

I rarely get them. When I did the very few times, in the winter, wash the windows on the car, it's cold and draws the blood away from the brain. In the summer, run cold water on the wrists, as it cools the blood, the blood is drawn from the brain, relieving the migraine. It's only temporary but it helps.

I will do that later this afternoon when everything calms down here...in the midst of weekly prep/inventory for dh's business. Saturdays are a really busy time for me. Normally I don't even get on the computer on Saturday til evening. lol

I used to get a lot of migraines, they usually get better when you get older. I found that against all common advise to use cold, if I wrapped up in an electric blanket, turned it up high and lay down in a dark room it was better than anything else I tried. Now, if I get one it only lasts 30 minutes or so.

I make a tea of lavender, rosemary, chamomile, and lemon balm. Sometimes, if I feel nauseated, I will add ginger.
I have read that putting cayenne on a q-tip up your nose is nearly always effective in stopping a migraine. I just can't decide which would be worse: a migraine or cayenne up my nares.

I've used the cayenne nasal spray. Yup - it hurts! I'll try anything to get rid of a migraine. If I don't take care of them quick, I'm down for the count. Completely nonfunctional, vomiting, the whole works. The only things I've found that truly work for me 100% of the time are Advil Cold and Sinus (and it has to be the solid tablets, not the gelcaps) and the prescription migraine meds such as imitrex and relpax. I try the AC&S first and give it an hour. It works about 75% of the time and if it doesn't I go ahead and take a relpax. I have found something that has been really decreasing the frequency of the headaches, though. Since I've started drinking kombucha every morning, I'm getting them much less often. Mine are triggered by allergies and this is allergy season. Usually this time of year I have a headache at least twice weekly, sometimes more. So far I've only been getting one about once every two weeks. Knock on wood. I'd like to try the tea you make - somebody else I know posted that the lavendar lemonaide was helping her migraines.

Nursing as in a a new mom?
For prevention - Sleep! fatigue was one of my triggers. Posture is also important - something as insignificant as wearing glasses half way down your nose can change the angle you hold your head at - the important thing to know is that the parts of the body should be parallel or perpendicular to the planes of the body - 90 degree angles. Caffeine can be a trigger, as can chocolate. (Darn, and those are comfort foods!)
Once one hits - cold at the base of the neck is supposed to help. Dark rooms, little noise, help. I hated to vomit, but if the migraine caused me to vomit, I knew it had peaked and would begin to subside.
I never had luck with prescription meds - BUT if it is safe to take when nursing - certain OTC headache meds - the extra strength varieties often have the same amount of active ingredient as the migraine variety, and are cheaper.

OMGoodness, is that like having someone stomp on your foot to take your mind off a toothache? Umm, thanks, but I'm good. Nothing really helped my migraines except the prescription meds - Maxalt, Vicodin, Phenergan if I was nauseous. I don't get them nearly as often anymore, and can often knock them out with a couple ibuprofen now, thankfully.

I have heard put your feet in a warm bath and put an ice pack on the back of your neck.
My sil gets horrible migraines. She was seeing a neurologist and was on tons of daily medications. She had some she took everyday, some she took if she felt one coming on, some she took if those didn't work and an epi pen type thing for the worst ones.
She changed doctors and the new one gave her botox shots all around her hairline and now she's off all her meds and has only had one migraine and a couple of small headaches since!

Mamatiger, I would be interested in your recipe when you get a chance.
So far for me Excedrin and an Iced Coffee help after I have downed tons of water.
