I am interested in learning to do leather tooling but really don't want to spend a ton of money trying out something I may not do well with. Is there anyone here that can give me some tips on how to get started, where to find simple instructions, etc. I do have a very basic set of tools, some letter and number stamps and some scrap tooling leather.

www.wikihow.com/Tool-LeatherHere's a pretty involved "how to" for leather tooling with some good pictures and hints. Know your leather. Know you tools. [I'd play with each tool to see how many designs I could get out of each stamp with repeated stamping of that tool.] Design placement and simplicity in the beginning is important. Have fun with it. It's not a "fast" project so don't be impatient. Look at old saddles - some have magnificent hand tooling.
