Today we lost the last of our first ever chickens. They were 2 yo when we got the six of them in 2012. The last grand dame of the flock died overnight. It's sad because she followed my husband around and was the most friendly of our flock. She and her cousins were our first foray into any kind of farm animal. They were forgiving as we learned. We have 40+ now, and even though none are 'pets' she had a special place on the roost and in our hearts. Thanks Loosey.

Our favorite "pet" was Henry, a Muscovy duck that was my buddy. Gone last fall. The rest of the ducks and chickens are ducks and chickens.

I'm sorry. I hope loving our animals expands our hearts some because a piece sure goes when we lose a pet.

I'm sorry about your hen. We have an Americauna kind of like that, She's the last of her generation and her age is really showing these days. The farm is going to seem awfully empty when she's gone.

I'm sorry. I lost most of my 1st and only flock 2 years ago and only have one hen left. She really is my pet chicken and she makes me happy.

There is always one or two... that end up being pets. Very sorry for your loss.

There is always one or two... that end up being pets. Very sorry for your loss. I totally agree with Bergere-- and I am TOTALLY sympathetic in regards to your loss. I have cried over a couple as my husband was burying them. (Gosh-hope that doesn't sound too nutty). The funny thing is-the ones that are our "pets" chose to be. We didn't single them out and try to tame them. They started coming up to us wanting to be held while we sat out in our chairs in front of the coops. "Girl" in my avatar is one of those and will be 6 in May-God willing. She will indeed take a piece of my heart with her whenever that fateful day comes... Mari
