Any place I can get a key with a chip for my car? Every place I contact wants big bucks.

We went to Walmart they said they could get us a chipped key. It was around $80. It didn't work in the ignition, only the door. We went to Ace Hardware, they said they could get us a chipped key. It was around $50. It also didn't work. We returned both sets of keys. The only place that can make us a key for this car is the dealership, and I hear it is very expensive.

WM and Ace told me they couldn't make the key. Key is double sided and takes a special machine to make. Dealer wants $135

As outrageous as that price sounds, that's about what I'd expect.

Feather is right. The only ones who can make the keys with the chips in them are the dealers. Super expensive. And wouldn't you know I need one!

If you lose all your chipped keys, think you are out of luck and towing car to dealer is only option. But if you have one key available that works, you can buy a blank chipped key, have it cut, then you can go through procedure in car to program it yourself. They used to sell them on ebay with instructions.
I havent had nor will I own one of these dealer extortion racket cars, but had friend with one and looked up all this info back at that time. I was amazed nobody had come up with a work around to defeat this stupid system. Only way is to go aftermarket with a custom engine control system like Megasquirt, then still screwed if you live in an emissions test state as they dont test actual tailpipe emissions from running car, they just plug their computer into the factory car computer and the computers have a chat. Thats how VW scammed EPA, they programmed the onboard computer to lie.
And latest cars, do they even use a key, dont you just carry some little fob with a chip. Then just push start button on dash? Kinda like the 1940s/1950s again, turn on ignition, then push a starter button on floor with your foot. Personally I'd just duct tape the dang fob to something under the dash so it doesnt ever get lost, then install some sort of hidden switch that doesnt cost a fortune if it goes bad to thwart thieves.

hermitjohn Everyone's comments/advice here has been invaluable. I do have a key w/chip. Car is 2003 Honda Civic Will make sure it not only locks/unlocks door but starts engine. Found someone says he'll do it for $86. When there's that much dif in price, I never trust anyways.

Yea, this anti theft chipped key thing, just smells like a scam to me. Legal scam, but still a scam. But its a brave new world, nothing has to make sense and for sure nothing is done for actual benefit of the consumer.

Yes, the fancier keys can only be had at the dealer and are very expensive. I much prefer the older cars with not fancy keys that I can have copied at Walmart.
