Another problem today. Rattles under the hood. Just started. Any ideas to what's wrong? Going to take in tomorrow.

Rattle. Engine noise, bad vibration or exhaust pipe rattle? All sound different. I would check it out and get a better description of the sound. Low on oil would be catastrophic. Loose exhaust pipe could fall off, timing belt could cause valves to hit pistons and could lead to an engine rebuild. No oil to valve train could be catastrophic. Hope it isn't much....James

Me, too. Oil changed recently. Bad timing along with other expenses.

Maybe open the hood and take a peek?

fixitguy Can look at tomorrow. I have an understanding of problem when someone explains it to me. Have no diagnostic skills when it comes to cars. Financially, this is really bad timing.

If "Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers" were still on the air you could always call into their radio show and try to imitate the sound that your car is making so that they can diagnose the problem. That was usually the best part of their show (callers making all kinds of funky noises).
Otherwise, not enough information. My Civic is just a little bit younger than yours so I would be interested to know what might fail next on mine. Just about a month or two ago it was the alternator.

At least check the oil. Does it sound tinny like tailpipe? Grinding, squealing or just rattles like something loose?....James

WOW Finally got a break. Went out this am; saw rubber piece that normally goes across front end of car, was completely dragging. Several times, a small piece came down on right side. Looked like it dry rotted. Does rubber piece have to be replaced?

That was actually a really good guess as, IIRC, 100,000 miles or so is when the timing chain is supposed to be changed. At least on the 2005 model and it is a chain on mine. I had it replaced when the head gasket blew just 3,000 miles outside of the warranty.

Well, that is good as long as that was what was making the noise. I am pretty sure that rubber does not rattle, but who knows. Not sure exactly what rubber piece you are referring to so I am unsure if it is really necessary. How about a picture? Or you maye can find the part on the Honda estore web site. Link Here...
Choose your car's year, model and type, then click "shop by category" tab and see if you can find something that matches what you are looking at. Without knowing exactly what the rubber piece is you may have to look through several pictures before finding it. Try to find something that the rubber is/was attached to and look for that something in the list.
