Ordered some white leggerns (leghorns) and new Hampshire reds yesterday, they should probably be here next Friday morning. I have some buff orpingtons in the brooding box now that are about a week old.
What new birds are y'all getting this year?

I am ordering 100 cornish rock tonight. I will go to Rural King after Easter & buy layer chicks. They will have them marked down then. I can get them cheaper that way. I also plan on getting about 50 ducks as I have customers wanting duck eggs & butchered ducks. Probably also throw i a few turkeys while I'm at it.

I'm waiting until after Easter when the kitchen table will be clear. Then the incubator will go up and the eggs will go in. I have a barnyard assortment of chickens - EE, barred rock, speckled sussex, couple of old BO and red sexlink. Will be fun to see what hatches. And I've already warned DH that once the chicks hatch I'm ordering a cackle hatchery surprise box.

I have 25 cornish cross and a few assorted layers coming in after Easter. Hatchery didn't have all the layer breeds I wanted in the quantity I wanted for the date I need (trying to work around two grauduations and a wedding in May--chicks need to be out of the brooder before May 1st), so I ordered what I could from my list. Plan to have a second order of broilers delivered in July, so will attempt to get the rest of my layers then. Either that or just pop over to the farm supply store the week my April order arrives and see what laying breeds they have in stock.

Currently I don't have a place to set up our incubator so placing an order Monday...getting the brown egg layer special. I had planned on getting some from the feed store but they just didn't look very well.

DS got the usual 12 Cornish cross chicks at the free chick day last Saturday. Buy a bag of feed get a dozen. They sure are growing. It will slow down a little now, they only get half starter and half ground oats this week. Then out in the grass and oats only after that. One old hen hatched 9, the other is setting on 10 also, they will hatch this week....James

This is the first Spring I won't be ordering chicks. BUT-I hope my Buff girl will go broody as she usually does and hopefully get some that way! She will be 6 in May and is an awesome mom. (That is her in my avatar). I would like to cross some Light Brahmas with a Buff Orpington roo. And get some more homemade Ameraucanas as well... I love chickens ... Mari

Am glad I am not the only one that likes chickens.
Ordered some more lavender Ameraucana bantams... am going to try to breed Ameraucanas to have the millie pattern in a porcelain color. Nothing like a good challenge right? LOL Love their temperaments and their tiny light blue eggs. Going to start hatching some eggs, as soon as my Millie d'Anver eggs arrive, from a breeder that has some outstanding birds. Normally I use broody hens to hatch out my eggs, but this time... is the first time, I am going to use a little Brinsea incubator. Hope all goes well, because those d'Anver eggs are spendy. (if I was smart, I would just wait until some of my hens went broody....)
For the big hens... I am just getting feathered out pullets... 3 more Welsummers and another Blue copper Maran, as I love, the really dark eggs.

we've got 2 incubators going now. 82 eggs total! I know, don't count them before they hatch... but! even if we get 70, thats a lot of birds!!! lol. some will go to my sister, some to a coworker. I'm not sure how many we'll keep for ourselves. they should be starting to hatch in about a week.

I am going to fill the incubator with guinea eggs. I read this too fast and I thought you said "I am going to fill the incubator with guinea pigs."

A mixed batch of Buff Orps, Barred Rocks and New Hampshire Reds are planned. We get ours from Farm and Home in Alma. We also will get 50 or so Cornish X. Once I get the house finished (an on going task for ever, it seems). Hertitage turkeys and Muscovy Ducks are being planned in the furure.

Not sure what we will have this year. I really, really, really want some Wheaten Marans but cannot find them anywhere close by. The hatchery I was going to order meat birds from doesn't carry the marans, and the only other places I can find to order from require a minimum order of 25. There is a lady in Minnesota who sells them, but hers are very pricey, and she does not ship. She is 3 hours from us and I do not want to drive that far just to get a few chicks. Still looking, though.

You know how people adopt, then get pregnant? I ordered those 50 Buckeyes and my favorite BO went broody. I should be a grandmother this weekend!

Awesome! I can't wait until we get moved and I can have chickens again. I can just imagine my city neighbors now, if they were awakened by the crow of a rooster in the morning! LOL

Bergere, thanks for posting the link. I just popped over to check it out, but did not see any Wheaten Marans. I sent an email just to double-check. She does have a lot of nice looking birds.

Better get the incubator out and working. Hahaha! Always. Gosh Wendy you ARE busy! I have way too many birds now......that being said, I just sold my breeding trio of Royal Palm Turkeys. And have 16 pullets inside growing up. A mix of Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps, Americanas, Barred Pylmouth Rocks etc. No Cornish rock X's this year though. I won't have time to take them to be processed or time to pick them up, and I don't do it myself yet. There's just the two of us and I am getting a dozen eggs a day already with out any new birds!

She doesn't have Wheaten as far as I know.... You are right, they are uber hard to find. But she may know, someone that has some. And if you need a Maran fix, until you can find some wheatens.....

Am on the waiting list with Holderreads, for some Lavender Geese (was also going to get some tiny Oregon Geese)... keeping fingers crossed I will have some by late Fall. They have some of the best waterfowl in the country.

I had planned on getting some from the feed store but they just didn't look very well. No chicks ordered after all. Had to set up incubator for the abandoned goose eggs...they hatched and have been "adopted" back into the flock. But since the incubator is already set up I went ahead and filled it up with eggs...and now we wait.
