I was in the supermarket yesterday and was looking to buy some seeds. For some Burpee pea seeds it cost $3.31, I said no way. I remember when seeds cost .99, talk about inflation.

I will buy seeds at that price, but it has to be a packet of something that I really want- like an heirloom tomato. I won't buy lettuce or carrots at that price though. Most all seed packets here are just under $3 this year.

Most all seed packets here are just under $3 this year. I agree it would have to be something I really want. The packet didn't even have that many seeds. I'm going to go to my local hardware store where I usually get them. At least I'll be giving them business.

Is it my imagination or are there a lot less seeds for a lot higher price as well?

I have such a small garden that I shop at the Dollar Store here where I can get seed packets for like 3 or 4 packets for a buck. Now tomato plants are a different story, I'm ordering mine from www.selectedplants.com this year cause I like to grow both heirloom and hybrids. Here is what I'm getting... TOMATOES: Crnkovic Yugoslivian Olive Hill Yoders German Yellow Ramapo Bear Creek Pink Ping Pong Zogola Momotaro And just so you know...I hate raw tomatoes they have to be cooked in some fashion or I ain't eating them...

I'll take your raw tomatoes, daylilydude, I love raw tomatoes sliced onto a sandwich, or just standing out in the garden with a salt shaker, eating tomatoes bending over so the juice doesn't run down my chin and all over my shirt. I miss summer! I do have a small overwintered tomato plant that set 2 fruit a few weeks ago. It might tide me over...

I can't imagine overwintering TOMATOES!! I can over winter spinach....in the greenhouse.
This is a horrible time of the year. My head starts thinking tomatoes...and my tongue totally rejects the ones in the store! I think I'll go plant some peas.

I love eating plain ole sliced tomatoes, but this time of year, they are just blucky! I was in a school last week and one of the ladies was eating sliced "tomatoes". They sure didn't look like tomatoes!

Checked the Burpee prices at WalMart and the peas on their racks ranged from $1.34 to $1.88. Home Depot has a much bigger selection of Burpee but same price range. Both have larger packets of organic peas for over $3 so they were possibly the $3.31 ones.
Jung's prices remained the same on roughly 90% of their seed inventory this year. If there were increases, most were 10¢. If anyone needs any seeds from Jung's, I can get them at catalog price plus tax and ship them for actual cost.

I do that too and when the cherry tomatoes are loaded up and ripe I'm in hog heaven. Hard to beat fresh sun warm tomatoes.

Now you all have done it. I am drooling for some fresh out of the garden tomatoes. I love to eat them with a salt shaker as well. Of course, I have months before I will have any fresh ones. They are not even planted yet.

We over winter tomatoes, planted in July, in the greenhouse off the bathroom. I also pull the tomato plants in the fall and hang upside down in my shop. We had tomatoes off these until Thanksgiving. Then greenhouse tomatoes all winter, still going. We do strawberries too. We probably eat 2/3 of the sweet 100s right off the vine. Also like them with thin spaghetti and a few fresh herbs. Bacon and lettuce sandwiches in the summer. One of my favorite meals is zucchini fritters and sliced tomatoes. We keep most of our own seed, but buy what we need at Bi-mart, this week they are 1/2 off, We like local grown seed....James

My new favorite place for seeds: fedcoseeds.com/ But you have to order a lot to avoid the small order fee, get together with a friend or two... I have been looking at all sorts of rare varieties, so I end up overpaying for them. I mean fedco doesn't carry San Marzano, Burpee does, but they want $3.95 a packet... If I wanted Amish Paste instead I could pay $1.40 at Fedco. To some extent it upsets me when I buy the $1 packets and there is hardly any seed in there, but I do like variety and would probably have to hold the rest of that seed to next year anyway. This mix was tempting, but I couldn't justify it with some old tomato seed laying around: www.fedcoseeds.com/seeds/search.php?item=4149

More important than packet price is the price per seed. Don't know where I saw it a few years ago but someone had compiled a list of packets offered by different companies and broke it down to price per seed. What looked like a bargain in one seed catalog was not when compared to the same variety at twice the cost in another catalog.

Some companies only list the weight which they are required to do. That can be confusing. For example, I am looking at 2 packets of onion seed from Burpee. One is Sweet White Spanish at $1.49. The other is Tokyo Long White at $1.67. The first is 1 gram and the second is 2.5 grams. A Jung's packet of Red Zeppelin states "250 seeds (800 mg)". Thus there is both quantity and weight.

The juices are good, but for sauce making I like the dryness of the San Marzanos.

I started maters this year from seed. Got 100% germination in 4 days. I did 18 plants. Put the rest of the seed back in the packets. Will store them in the fridge.

Most seed does fine in warm storage for one year. Germination rates go down but not horribly. I did throw seed in the freezer when I accidentally bought a 10 year supply of mangel seeds.
