We had babies last week, & we had another doe give birth yesterday! The doe from yesterday was a big surprise though. When we put her in with the buck, she didn't look like she lifted, & he certainly didn't fall off. Nothing like babies on the farm!

I don't usually mess with the babies until they are a bit older.

The lighting in the barn isn't that great, & the babies are so covered with hay & fur,I have yet to see them. I do check them every day. I can't wait to see them! I like one doe so much that I will probably keep a few of her baby does. As a first time mom, she had 9 babies & is a phenomenal mom!

I found that if the mothers were "pets" and used to be handled a lot, I could get into a nest virtually within a few hours after the babies were born. The mothers would often watch almost with a smile or showing pride. Never had a doe abandon her babies no matter what we did. That included sometimes unexpectedly finding a ball of moving hair over bare screen. Move mother and babies to a proper brood cage and no problem. But those does were handled so often that they had no fear of human smell.

We handle our does a lot. They are as much a pet as they are for production. I do check the babies in the nest boxes, but it's so cold here, I wouldn't pull the babies out.
