I know what an air filter and oil filter are. What's a cabin filter?

It's a air filter for the inside air. IIRC you own a Honda? The glove box door, and liner need to come out to access the filter.

in a subaru the entire glove box has to come out but it is not that hard to replace, nice not to have the car filled with dust inside
if you don't want to replace it, remove it entirely, it can break the fan if it gets clogged up to much

When exactly did everything get so complicated? If this or lot other things were listed as expensive options instead of just included, how many people would opt in??? I still dont get electric windows, seems just way to get more money, not something that most people (other than few disabled people) have slightest need. And they are truly annoying for the later owners beyond the original buyer. They do not age well.
I can still remember when an interior heater/defroster was optional on a car! NOw if you lived in northern state, you only opted out if you had cheaper way to add one, either aftermarket or dealer installed... And full size cars were available with a six cylinder and three speed manual transmission. And you could actually find such a stripped down basic model on the dealer lot if you didnt mind color of the paint.

My cabin filter turns out to be a place for rodents to get in on the exterior side of the fire wall to build a nest. Oh what THAT does for the cabin air quality!

I like the cabin air filter I did not order the car with it, but figured out that all the cars like mine came with the spot to put one, so I ordered the filter and put it in...
if you ever plan on driving away from nuke fallout, or from volcanic ash, it will be very nice to have. I don't assume that the world got so complicated from people planning to drive through the apocalypse, my guess is that many people spend so very much time in the car commuting that they want it nicer than where they live
if your car has the cabin air filter in it and you don't want it there, you can remove the filter and your car will be just like people's cars that did not order the car with one.
I would try adding hardware cloth to block any spots where rodents are trying to live in a car.

my commute use to be a 2 hour drive each way I think it would be a toss up whether to drive four hour a day or just shoot myself and hope for better situation in my next reincarnation....... I know it would have to be darn good paying job to put myself through that.

This is what a cabin air filter looks like from a Honda accord. With out the filter in place, a critter has run of the whole heater box.
