Lol, I'd be there if you'd just move to my neighborhood. Actually, dipping beaks is highly overrated in group situations. Show a few of them and they will show the others for you. Keep an eye out to see if any of the chicks don't look like they are figuring it out and help them along. When I lived on the family farm, we received about 30,000 chicks at once - believe me, there is no beak dipping that many. We put down newspaper roll ends under the feeder track and dumped (literally dumped) the crates of chicks on the paper. They quickly found the feed and once they ate, they were looking for water. I think they found it by smell! We lost very few chicks, and usually those were ones that arrived on the truck in poor condition for some reason -hatch defects and the like.

That would be great, but you better believe I will be checking pockets of any and all help before they leave WHAT?!?!?!?! No trust?
I'm hurt & crushed......
Besides which, I believe that we are protected from such illegal searches & that such a search and/or seizure is unconstitutional under the 4th Amendment (applied to the states by the 14th Amendment), and evidence obtained thereby may not be introduced into a court of law. Of course that ONLY applies, if you are a law enforcement officer acting under a probable cause..... besides, who's going to miss a couple of birds?

copperkid3 , That made me chuckle, and I do have a couple of responses, first lets not forget about the mint companies and all employees are searched before they leave from work each day, second lets not forget our 2nd amendment and I am in Kentucky and we ALL carry in this state and we all ARE law enforcement here, want to meet my 357 , and if that doesn't stop you we can treat the whole ordeal and operate like a coke/crack house and all come in naked and we won't have to worry about pockets at all....LOL

Excuses excuses......everyone has vacation time and I am giving you all plenty of notice Okay so far I have one recruit who is a local (and has no excuse) booked for Sept 30th, I will have to watch her though as I seen her yesterday and she was wearing some kind of painters pants that has sooooo many pockets Just so you all know it isn't ALL about dipping the beaks, they have to be counted as well to make sure they (hatchery) hasn't messed up the order in quantity also

Not only will you & whoever volunteers to help you have to count to make sure they're all there from the hatchery, but then you'll have to someone do it all over again, (AND without them being aware of it happening~while they're still on the premises) to make sure that some chicks don't manage to wander off in the deep recesses of some painters' pants pockets...... I keep getting these horrid images in my head of hearing those chilling words: "Okay.....hand it over!!!, We're one short and I know you took it~~~!!!"

aoconnor, No problems with the giggles and REDO, I have three spare empty bedrooms and two spare full baths, so if it takes us a few days plenty of room for a stay vacation
copperkid3, But they are soooo irresistible and you can't just stop at one (as you know this already by the number of chicks you have or have on order)

So sorry, gosh I wish I could be there to help dip 650 tiny little beaks and count chicks (over and over again because we will wind up with a serious case of the giggles and forget how many we already counted). Darn. Rats. shellymay , lol, I don't want to know who's going to be in charge of frisking the volunteers! I can just see copperkid3 volunteering for the job! I'm afraid I, too, will be busy that day....which day, you ask? Whichever day you are counting and dipping chicks, of course! Shucky-darns....

Awesome set up. I do the same as you. Raise them & sell them as layers & even sell the older ones to people to butcher. I will hit Rural King later this week & get some more.

Nice pics. Your Kentucky rolling hills remind me a lot of the land around here. Not a lot of level!

of the herd in pics #2,4,5,6 and 11 really was, when it suddenly sat upright in pics #7 and 10.... coming to life as a LGD ~ looks like a Great Pyrenees?

I had an Isa Brown chicken that laid a double yoke egg weekly one summer. I could always tell which egg it was when I collected them. Thought about incubating one but they dont tend to survive.

Thanks everyone, As I said there is 62 yearling ewes in the above pictures, 40 of them are for sale and we have a buyer who confirmed last night that they will be purchasing 20 of them, YIPPY.......... they are some really nice folks and will need some mentoring but I will be happy to help out anyway that I can They are also purchasing a yearling ram (unrelated) and we are going to band one of the boys born this year for them so the ram has a weather friend, they are also going to take two of the new puppies that we had born on Monday of this week. This weekend weaning starts for the lambs born this year in March and I am so not looking forward to all the weaned lambs and their CRYING because they were separated from their mums...

Lovely farm! And of course love the chicken pics. Whereabouts in KY are you? I have an uncle in Georgetown and always used to crash with him whenever I traveled down to the horse park for events. I'm tied down with the dairy now so don't travel anymore, but always enjoyed the drive through KY. Even though I never got off the freeway to see too much of it. I need to fence a small lot for the pigs. It's measured in square feet not acres and I'm shuddering at that cost! I'm used to putting up wire fence for the cows which isn't quite so bad.

WindyRidge, Georgetown is just a few hours away I think........... DH spotted a antique brooder on CL about two weeks ago, I went and looked at it and to purchase if it was in running order, manufactured in 1955 all was good and it was in excellent shape (kept in doors it's whole life) paid $135.00 for it and boy was it going to come in handy for the new shipment of chicks as the weather here has plummeted down to 50's at night and only reaching 63-64 for the highs.... kinda like the Brinsea Brooder for Chicks but this one is old and huge, well you can get about 300-400 or a little more chicks under it, and it was going to be a welcoming addition to my coop. Chicks arrived Friday and me and ONLY one of my girl friends dipped all those beaks, most of you were surely still in your nice warm beds as I picked them up at post office at 6:00am...LOL Couldn't get a good picture of the antique brooder, had to hang tarp to keep chicks confined to one side of room and I lost my sunlight due to tarp, the red bulbs also mess with my pictures and camera, I will someday get you real clear pictures but this is it for now.... SOOOOOOOOOOO many boxes, lol The brooder has a window on one end of it............................................................... I took these pictures through the window of brooder with my camera, OH what a site sooooooo many chicks under the brooder!!! After work when I checked on everyone, all still alive and tons have learned to use the brooder, I did add two more of the old style heat lamps for more heat in coop......Checked on them again this am and only had one dead chick, trust me I am really thrilled and excited with this brooder
