My old buck has a hit. I think it was caused by too much alfalfa hay. I gave him some for a few days as I was low on Timothy. He's drinking water and peeling quite a bit, though he's eating well. Which antibiotic should I use for him?

Urinary calculi in bucks is caused by eating too much grain--too high phosphorus diet, not by eating hay. It is fixed with ammonium chloride, not antibiotic. I think you need to read up on this, ammonium chloride is the only thing that will cure urinary calculi, if that's what he has. You should be able to pick it up at your feed store. hoeggerfarmyard.com/urinary-calculi-in-goats/

Do you think its UC or UTI? They are both different.
Hay CAN cause UC, but the alfalfa would not have caused it. Depending on when the timothy hay was cut, you could potentially have UC issues with that hay, not the alfalfa. I have found that wethers and buck that are on a well balanced grain (+ hay) with AC in it do not have problems with UC. Its when people don't have well balanced hay, feed, or like to give "treats" that are high in phosphorus such as BOSS etc.

I will look into that ammonium chloride. I am giving him homemade (no sugar) cranberry juice in his water. The excess water consumption started about 2 weeks ago, but I thought the problem was the water bottle was leaking. I gave him a different one a few days ago and then I realized he was drinking a lot. The blood in his urine started Thursday night. He did urinate out some "sludge" yesterday so I do think he got too much calcium, but maybe we're dealing with two problems? He is urinating a lot. He gets manna pro rabbit pellets, usually Timothy hay, and some fresh veggies and a little apple sometimes. We don't raise bunnies though when my children were young they showed rabbits, sheep, etc at the 4h fair. He's the last one left, and he's probably 8 or so. We hadn't planned to have another rabbit, but he was left at a friend's farm, and they didn't want him, so I took him. He's a very sweet little guy. He's eating well and still active and happy.

Oh, oops, I didn't read the post carefully. Or I got thrown off by the slight typo, not an excuse, but my brain does that. Yes, if he has uriniary calculi, he will be straining to pee, with very little, if any coming out. And the blockage will kill him if not treated with ammonium chloride. But if he is peeing freely, that's not the problem.

Now I'm really red in the face. Evidently it said UTI all along? And was in the rabbit section? That's what I get for just looking at "recent threads." I'm so sorry, I thought we were talking about a buck goat with UC. I'm backing out now.

That's ok:) I do think he might have a little too much calcium since he peed sludge out. I did go ahead and order some ammonium chloride since that will help with that. Feed store was out. I also switched him to Timothy based pellets to see if that makes any difference. But he is peeling normally with a bit of blood sometimes. The vet thought the cranberry juice would help as long as it's given for only a short time.
