So, what is your favorite thread for hand quilting? piecing? machine quilting? applique? and why?
For machine quilting, I prefer Superior So Fine threads. My longarms love it. It doesn't take away from the piecing. I don't have trouble with it fraying.....it's just my favorite all around thread.
What about you??

I've never tried Superior threads. I have a friend who says it is the only thread to use for hand applique.
I like aurifil thread for my sewing machine and for hand applique. I also use it for quilting the few projects I quilt on my sewing machine.
Why? In 'my' sewing machine, it doesn't lint up like coats & clarks did. It is a fine, smooth thread so it appliques nicely.
I haven't tried all the brands of threads so I only know about a few.
Here is a link to thread from Connecting Threads. I've never tried this thread, but the prices sure look good. If someone has tried this thread, please let me know what you think of it.

I use all different kinds of thread. My machines don't seem to care at all although I don't like the older Coats and Clarks.I have used the Connecting Threads thread and it works fine. I like Sulky for machine embroidery, but the coats and Clarks metallic does work well.

Mettler silk finish 100% cotton has gotten to be the standard in my local quilting store. The color shades are very good and fast.
I like it for hand sewing and machine both, it has a smooth crispness that makes other threads look sleazy.

I love Connecting Threads. Lots of colors, good prices, not super linty. My machine loves it. I like Gutermann threads too.

I haven't used a big variety of threads, but I do like Mettler and Gutermann threads. And when I orginaly tried these brands, it was because I received them in a gift.

I have used Gutermann and Coats & Clark "Star" quilting thread. Both are very good. I have some Superior on hand, but haven't tried it yet.
I'm piecing only.

Long long ago I used Coats & Clarks dual duty. They changed how they make it, now using animal fat to keep the very short fibers in place. It breaks in my machine and leaves dust. I use Mettler. They have different types. I use the silk finish for most sewing, but they also have quilting thread.

I mainly use Essential thread from Connecting Threads in my sewing machine. It is the right price and my machine does very well with it. For hand quilting, I almost always use Gutermann. I have tried others, but always come back to Gutermann. I have a large supply of the basic colors. I mostly use beige, ecru, or gray. I have used red, green, and blues, but seldom.

Interesting. Does anyone feel like their machine only "likes" one particular kind of thread? In the Longarm group I am in, a LOT of the ladies feel like their machine only likes a particular thread.

Yes, for my machines it's true. My Viking 870 loves aurifil thread and I do lots of quilting with that machine. Thread never breaks. Just great thread. My Janome 6600 is a workhorse and uses superior or any other good thread I put in her. I haven't done free style quilting with that one though. That's the test with thread imo. I won't buy the junk thread from Joanne or Hobby Lobby. It seems to leave lots of dust in the machine or breaks even when I'm simple sewing with it.

I have a Janome 6600 as well. She is a work horse and will use anything. Love my Janome!

Have a question for all of you...do you use cotton or polyester? I am switching to better thread and wondered which is best, mostly piecing and some plain quilting with a walking foot.

I have a big down on polyester thread unless you're sewing 100% polyester fabric.
It stretches more than cotton, so it's more likely to leave puckered stitching. Plus it melts. Other than the stretchy thing, it's on the market for cheapness.

for handquilting I will only use Gutermann. I do have some YLI if I ever get around to using it. It was an impulse buy because it was on wooden spools . For piecing I get my thread from a small business within an hour of me and it comes on HUGE spools. I probably never need to buy thread as long as I live.
