I am making a quilt as a wedding present for a young couple. My only guidelines are that they like true colors, like Royal purple, deep blues, etc. Absolutely NO pastels.
So I am asking for your thoughts on what other colors you might use and what you think would look good together. Also, tone on tone or small prints or maybe a mix??

My first thought, until I read the no pastels part, was if they might like an Amish type quilt with a black background and all solids.
Either way, I like nice bright golds--not yellows--with rich colors like jewel tones, purple, deep blue, burgundy, etc.

Go to the quilting store and look at their collections. Fabric makers put out “collections” of fabric so that you can mix and match without guesswork. You should be able to find a collection in dark colors and the sales person can help you had a spark, like the gold.

I think the jewel tones - amethyst, sapphire, ruby and amber - would really show off against a dark green or black background. If you used green, you'd be able to add touches of black to the jewel toned blocks. It sounds like they would definitely like Amish solids.

How about a white plus deep color quilt. White with navy or one of the jewel tones. Classic and will never be outdated.

I second going to a store where you can actually see and compare colors. Also I might add, since it is a "wedding" gift, why not create blocks with double wedding rings in them?
