Our little Sunny was supposed to be due March 1, or March 22. The 22nd came and past and we presumed that she lost her calf due to a bout of anaplasmosis last year. The vet palated her at the time and she was pregnant then.
A couple of weeks ago she started humping the other cows and stood for them to do the same. The cows will do that 2-3 weeks pre delivery, but based on the dates I was pretty sure she was in heat.
Sure enough, on the 8th she hopped fence for a visit with the neighbor's bull, and he took care of business.
Im not about to milk in January, so I am definitely going to terminate this one. My question is, should I do it at the first opportunity, or should I wait and try to time it with a June visit with said neighbor? I would think sooner would be better from a reproductive health standpoint.

I'd say the sooner the better. Although milking in January isn't so bad!

I stop in January. My air lines condense and freeze. My cold water tap, and sometimes the hot, freezes. If it weren't for that, I would prefer it over summer milking. Demand for milk is stronger in winter, too.
Around January 15th I start booking flights to the Mexican Riviera.

We had a couple of cold nights/mornings when our portable vacuum pump wanted to choke up, but Numb always managed to get/keep it running for the duration! I am proud that we made it through the winter, but not sorry that we'll probably dry her up before the next one!
