I love to sew. I usually sew mostly clothing. In fact I'm working at getting all that paraphernalia organized and cataloged. I'm using EverNote for that. Patterns are done and now I'll be starting on fabric. At the moment, I'm not doing too much apparel sewing as I'm trying to lose more weight. Started Weight Watchers in July have lost 25 pounds (since December I'm gaining and losing the same 3 pounds) but with Spring, now I'm more active and hopefully that will help.
Have been doing some quiltmaking--currently working on Calico Girls Block of the Month and I'm hand stitching it.
What about everyone else? Do you sew mostly clothes, quilts, household stuff?

For many years I made 90% of both my husband's and my clothes. Now I have grands and greatgrands and I sew both clothing and quilts for them.

When I started sewing, it was all clothes for my kids and occasionally a dress or jumper for myself. Then the kids got bigger and not so keen on mom-made jammies and dresses. . . so I turned to quilting. Now, with two grandkids, I'm getting back into sewing clothing again.

Sweetie makes all our lounge pants and pajamas. She makes many of her skirts, from a pattern she really likes....James

I started sewing for others just as I got out of highschool. I'd made my own clothes during school.
I did that for several years, then quilting caught my attention. I quilted for years, then there were a few rough years with my health where I didn't sew a stitch.
I started back sewing for myself and doing alterations for others a couple of years. A lot of the alterations were on 'rodeo queen clothes', and from that I started making a few outfits. I got three new orders this morning for 'queen outfits', just have to get together for the initial 'fitting/measuring' and planning.

I used to make most of our clothes. I made DDs maternity wardrobe, then told her she was on her own, I was sewing for the grands....
Tommyice, I have been keeping Fabric Mart in business, since you posted about them. They have great fabric!

I sewed all my own clothes during my working years. Now that I'm retired, I've added a lot of weight and can't seem to be able to sew to fit myself. The last few projects wound up trashed. I've purchased enough duct tape to get DH to help me make one of those duct tape doubles. I know, that will be a pretty sight. LOL I really want to be able to fit myself well again and get back to a hobby that I love.

When my oldest started school, I made everything except underwear and socks for her. As each one started school, it seemed I had less time. Then sewed for granddaughter, then started quilting. DH will go to the fabric store with me, but he is always looking for shirt stuff. I made the mistake of making him some western style shirts when we first met! I kinda got out of all the fancy yokes and cuffs and piped pockets in favor of quilts. He still asks though! He has his own embroidery machine and bought me a quilting machine. We are making a road trip this next week to get him a computerized quilting machine!

I sewed almost all of the clothes for our five kids until they got to the age where it was no longer cool to wear things mom had made. I also made most of dh's shirts till fabric got so expensive. Now I just catch his shirts on clearance or the thrift store. I still sew all of my skirts and jumpers, but have not needed any for a while. I bought some new blouse and skirt patterns from Joann's when they were $.99 each a while back. I hope to sew some more clothes for myself this summer.

My wife made her own clothes starting during her Junior High School years, and continued on through High School. She made nearly everything for all of us (family of five) except for under things for several years during the 70s & 80s. She never liked making clothing for others outside of the family, and still doesn’t.
We both sew, and have been doing alterations and mending for the public for the past 9 years, but no garment design or construction. She makes her own aprons (cotton prints) and I make mine (denim), but otherwise we just “fix” clothing and don’t make it from scratch.

Wow, you guys! I am not a good sewer. It was offered in Junior High, but not well thought of. I have made a few things, pants for me, which I redesigned a little to put elastic in the waist at the sides only, a quilted vest, some dresses and pajamas for my DD. I also made her First Communion dress and an Easter dress. But I am just not good at it. I am good at quilting, and even more so now that I have a good machine, a Singer 301.

I used to sew quite a but then stopped. I'm hoping to get back into sewing my skirts and jumpers again. I have been knitting more lately. I have always wanted to do a patchwork quilt and this is on my list of things to do this year.

Been sewing since I was 8.Mom started me on an old treadle machine to see if I was really interested and then got me a nice Kenmore. Used to make all mine and my twin sis's clothes. Sewed for husband and children but now I rarely make clothes other than pj bottoms for me or an apron or such. So now I quilt and buy too much fabric....so many gorgeous fabrics compared to the days of buying fabric at Woolworth's in the basement!

I made all my own clothes starting when I was 12 until I had my daughter and could never fit myself after that. The weight has gone up and down and up again over the years. I occasionally make a quilt top and like to make purses. I have a leather one cut out now, just trying to decide what to line it with and how to fasten. Now that I have a granddaughter, I may sew for her some.

I have sewn my own clothing off & on through out the years. I also sew bags, dolls, doll clothes, stuffed toys, curtains pillow cases, table cloths, period clothing etc. I do shop at thrift stores for clothing but also for items of clothing to use as fabrics. And I learned how to alter clothes so they will fit me better. I loved sewing for my children and my girls often had special dresses for Christmas made out of an old prom or bridesmaid dress from the thrift store for less than $2.00. One such dress was one of those little "bubble" dresses for my oldest daughter. It was a 1959 hunter green bridesmaid dress that even had it's little pillbox hat. I used everything, including the zipper, hook & eye and the bow. Of late I have been pondering on being more of a producer rather than a consumer and am wanting to get back into making what I need. Some things I'll still buy but I'd like to see just what I can do to meet our needs myself.

lilredrocker, do you have a pattern for the leather purse? or just use a pattern for bags? I have stocked up on leather skirts to use for various leather items. Most were half off at the Thrift store or buck a bag day. Currently I need a new check book cover and would like to make that. Another project I would like to make is some leather mittens lined with wool or flannel.

Another project I would like to make is some leather mittens lined with wool or flannel. JD, I have a collection of purse patterns, but I find I only use two or three consistently, one a tote and another shaped kind of like a half moon. I ordered a bundle of scrap leather on Etsy and in it was half a purse in a shape I liked. There was enough of a matching piece to cut an identical piece, so now all I need is a piece for a strap and a bottom. I like my purses to sit up on their own. I also have a supply of leather garments from GW that I use. Even on garment leather, a roller foot helps. I do not have a teflon foot but have read that this also helps. This winter I bought a 29-4 for heavier leather but need to find some more thread for it since red won't look right on brown or black leather. A simple wristlet makes a nice gift, especially when made of leather. I once found a pair of beautiful soft riding boots at GW in a size I couldn't get my toe in. I cut the tops off, found a scrap to make a bottom, traced the pieces before I sewed the sides and bottom on to make a lining and glued the lining to the top. I used the pull up straps to insert rings for the straps. I carried it for several years until it got caught behind the seat in my truck, I tugged too hard and one of the pull up straps tore. I haven't figured out how to repair it and still make it look nice.

Nice idea for the boots. On the repair, if you can't make it look the way it's suppose to look, can you change it in such a way that gives it a different, kind of contrasty look? My daughter one year, had some brown leather low heels. She sewed brown leather to the shoes, made button holes and sewed buttons on for the look of those old fashioned button up shoes. And actually used the button hook to close them up. Looked nice and added to the period look she was aiming for.

I've made my first dress when I was 13 and I"m 72. I've make all kinds of apparel. Now, I can't sew much because I have arthritis inmy hands, but istill do easy stuff. DH loved my homemade dress shirts as I could adjust the pattern exactly to his body.

I sewed most of my clothes, my dd's and son and dh's shirts for many many years. Suddenly the cost of fabric was sky high and thrift stores and garage sales became common so I now thrift most of our clothes. I did make a dress recently, made several dresses for a girl at church last year but mostly sew curtains and aprons these days. I do have a stash of fabric and patterns as part of my preps. I've saved buttons from discarded garments for many years so now have more buttons than I'll use in two lifetimes.
