Does anyone breed rabbits during the summer? I had planned no more breeding until mid to late September as it gets so hot. Our rabbits are in a well ventilated barn, & it has been suggested to me that I breed the rabbits during the summer. Any advice or tips are appreciated!

I bred three does this week. It is supposed to get to 90* today and that makes my bucks go sterile. So this will by last breeding until September/October (30 days after the last 90* day).
I only breed my rabbits 2 or 3 times per year. I want to make sure my does stay in good condition, and we don't need more meat than that. My rabbits are in a shaded and electrified barn. I'm in the mountains and it gets into the 90's only 3 or 4 times per summer. Just enough to affect my bucks and increase water intake.

If you can breed them before it gets too hot, summer is a pretty good time to raise kits...you don't get the kind of losses to cold that you see in winter. Kits that get dragged out of the nestboxes and onto the wire have a chance to survive. The main thing is to breed before it gets so hot that the bucks are no monger fertile.

It's already in the 90's here, so I guess I'll wait & see if it cools down any.

If it's in the 90's, it's likely that your buck(s) will not be fertile until it's cooled down in fall (can't remember exactly, but I'm thinking 6-8 weeks of sterility from heat).

I think my original idea of mid to late September is what I need to stick with. I think this summer is going to be a hot one.
