Except when my trees and berries are in season DH and I just don't eat enough fresh fruit, and it's good for his BP to have more fresh fruit Every day,so I'm starting to make breakfast smoothies. My first try was banana, apple, raspberry, pineapple (just frozen overnight to avoid ice cubes) and greek yogurt with water...although I think OJ would have been a little nicer than water. I know from the old days I like wheat germ and honey too but I was avoiding sweetening this time. I also like strawberries the best but he's a raspberry fan. I don't mind using milk too; I'm just trying to figure as "healthy" as possible for us old folks. I used to love Orange Julius (sp ?) but never knew what was in them, haha, probably some sugar! What's Your favorite smoothie?

I love to make smoothies with frozen bananas, any other fruit that is available, a scoop of protein powder, some wheat germ and orange juice. Sometimes I'll put in yogurt or a little goat milk. Oh - and a tiny bit of vanilla and sometimes a little nutmeg.

M favorite breakfast smoothie is:
1 c water, or coconut water 1 T flaxseed 1 c raspberries, or blueberries, etc. 1/2 to 1 banana 1/4 c spinach or kale (trust me, you don't taste it) 1 T almond butter, or peanut, or cashew, etc. 2 t lemon
Yummo!
Another good one is:
1 small cucumber 1 c kale or spinach 1/2-3/4 green apple 1/2 lime 1 T coconut oil 1/2 c almond milk 1 c pineapple
The trick to making it a meal replacement is that you've got to have proteins and fats to make it satisfying...

@fffarmergirl, Love the touch of vanilla idea;that hadn't occurred to me but now I'm thinking of other extracts I have too, like almond. This is going to turn into a fun eating adventure! @traciintexas, Thank you! I wasn't thinking of adding greens yet but I Always have kale growing and know how nutritious it is...Love how you said " (trust me, you don't taste it)" Har Har. What a super great thing to sneak in! I actually got an avocado yesterday because they are on the "best" foods list for my DH's blood pressure. Didn't add any my first try today but plan to do so.

Luckily the proteins and fats are commonly in the same items. Play around with things like
Walnuts, cashew, peanuts, almonds Milks, soy, almond, cow, and yogurt Eggs Seeds of sesame, chia (hydrates to a thickener and gives a tapioca texture), quinoa (last nights leftover, cooked), hemp, flax, pumpkin, sunflower... Oats! And all those nut butters! And the lovely avacado
If there's something that's going to taste strong, hide it with a squeeze of lemon or lime.
If you make a smoothie the night before, and it has chia, it will thicken up overnight! (Easy and healthyish chocolate pudding, chocolate milk and a T of chia!)

Such good ideas here. My favorite smoothie involves a frozen banana, frozen orange juice concentrate, a tiny dab of vanilla, a bit of milk (lactose-free and calcium fortified for me), and whatever other fresh or frozen fruit is available (nectarine and strawberry are my faves). I'll have to try adding some sunflower seeds or peanut butter. Can't do leafy greens(too much vit K) right now.

If we have leftover cooked oatmeal we will put about 2 heaping Tblspns into a Magic Bullet sized glass with milk, yogurt, fruit...whatever we've got.....smoothies are a great way to use up the little bits around here.

At my age, I like to add some fruit that boosts the immune system, i.e. black currants, goji berries, elderberries, blueberries, etc. And adding fresh greens (kale, lambsquarter, young dock, poke salet, etc.) is healthy too. Oh and throw in a "raw" egg on occasions....

I'm a "dump" chef so no real recipe. The one thing I add to make smoothies a meal is about a tablespoon or so of peanut butter. One banana-frozen and about 2 cups of other frozen fruit. We use milk as the liquid, but have used bits of left over juice when it's around (which is rather rare) Also I'll hide spinach or kale on my "I don't like greens" kid this way. She knows it's in there, but doesn't mind it We have bees, so if I taste it and it needs sweetness I add our honey.....usually a mush with greens are added as they can be a bit bitter. A bit of vanilla, cinnamon or nutmeg can change up the flavor if you get stuck in a rut whit the fruits on hand.

I've used a lot of these suggestions and got our smoothies tasting Great to us. We Really like OJ and vanilla base and lots of berries with banana pineapple and apple. Neither of us are blueberry fans but I Know how extra "healthy" they are and with my mixed berries we love that addition. We've eaten a smoothie every day for two weeks now....took to it like ducks to water! haha. Honestly I've never been good with eating enough fruit and I already miss my smoothie on the rare day I've skipped! I swear our eyes look brighter these days. Not extreme but I really think my overall health is up a notch or 2. I better sub 2/3 the banana with chia for thickener though since I can't seem to keep my calories in line now! The smoothies are thick enough to be a "meal" but I'm treating them like a drink...oooops. I think I'll get a popsicle mold and use smoothie mix that way too.

I like most anything in mine. A new experiment was a grapefruit with watermelon...very good! I buy a frozen berry mix that I use all the time, too. Once I bought some frozen fruit with kale. I do not like Kale but you couldn't taste it in the smoothie.
