Oliver was chasing Abby's feet under the blankets on my bed (he was on top the covers), and he didn't stop at the edge, falling off the bed. He's probably fallen off the bed a dozen times or more, but this time, he landed wrong and broke his leg! Xrays showed the left hind leg has a broken tibia, but thankfully, the fibula is not broken and is acting as a splint for the tibia. So, he doesn't have to wear a splint or cast, which would be a nightmare to try to keep on him. The good news is that kittens heal so quickly that he should be totally healed in about 3 weeks. The bad news is that we are supposed to keep him on cage rest for two weeks. How do you convince a 3 month old kitten that he needs to rest? And how do you convince his bratty brother, Stanley, that climbing all over Ollie's cage is just cruel, lol? I can almost hear the "neener, neener, neener"s from Stanley, while Ollie is hopping around the cage on 3 legs, trying to keep up. I've started letting Ollie out for brief periods of time, as long as I see that he's using three legs instead of four, and not climbing up on anything he could fall off of again. Of course, that means also watching Stanley like a hawk so he doesn't knock Ollie over or hurt him in some other way. It's gonna be a long three weeks....

ROFL Couldn't help but laugh at such a scenario. I can just see those two kittens as they cope with the situation. Oh dear, you do have your work cut out for you. Hope your still agile enough....

Ollie is being so good this afternoon. He's been out of the cage for several hours, and has been lying down to rest frequently. Stanley was wrestling with him at first, and I decided to just stand by closely and see what happened, knowing I could step in quickly if I heard any signs of distress. After a few minutes of tussling, Stanley laid down next to Ollie and they cuddled up to nap together. Right now, they've just finished playing with some light weight plastic golf balls (think ping pong balls)and are curled up on the bed next to me, falling asleep again.
Maybe Stanley was just trying to find a way into the cage to be with his brother, rather than being a teasing brat. These two are best buddies, and the gal I got them from said they had been the two, right from birth, that always curled up together to sleep. Both of them look pretty happy to be snuggled up together. I think I owe Stanley an apology!

Hope Ollie heals quickly and that the brothers can be reunited permanently soon.
And I hope you still have all your hair when that day comes!

We made it past the 2 week mark! Ollie is doing great, starting to bear weight and getting around just fine. I have to laugh, though. Right now, he's sound asleep and sliding off the edge of the bed - guess I'd better rescue him before he falls off again. Adventurous kitty, but kind of a slow learner, lol!

Oh my gosh, manygoatsnmore,! Hope Ollie heals quickly! We had a stray cat my mom sorta adopted when I was in college. He wasn't inside or anything, had barely been around the house much more than a few days. My Oma was visiting us from Germany, and would sit outside with the cat and smoke. He saw her come out one evening and ran over to the house... right in front of a car! He broke his pelvis and had to have his tail removed in the end. That pelvis was the hardest thing for him! He too was a cage rest requirement... the night the vet released him, he was zooming around inside the house, pleased with his new-found roof over his head, I am sure! He got going so fast he managed to get his cone of shame jammed and stuck under the fridge! It took us a bit to convince him to let us help him loose! We had obviously given up on that cage rest concept and just let nature take its course.

Ollie's doing great. He still walks a little cow hocked, but as he continues to heal, I believe he will go back to standing squarely on 4 legs. He surely isn't being slowed down any more - runs just as fast as Stanley and chases everything in sight. He spent part of last night snuggled under the covers with me and purring so loudly I couldn't sleep. I finally had to banish him to the living room, just so I could get a few winks! When he's not trying to attack me, he is the most loving little snuggle bug imaginable, lol. Both he and Stanley are still learning that it's okay to play rough with each other, but not with humans. Much improved, but not perfect yet. For 4 months old, though, they are doing well.
