Awwwww-the ducks are precious...I can't wait until I get a coop freed up so I can take a crack at raising them! What duck breeds do you have?

I got Pekins & Rouens. The Pekins are to butcher. I know, I'm bad!

Nah-you're not bad...You know where your duck comes from! I'm not a vegetarian-don't have a problem with it...By the way-just curious-do you have multiple coops? A big barn? Just wondering a bit about your setup if you don't mind...

I have a fairly large room in the back of the barn that I use to brood them in. Works great as it is draft free with outlets for the heat lamps. Once they get big enough they go out into chicken tractors. Or in this case, I will have a duck tractor. The layers will be put in a large tractor until they are big enough to go in the coop with the rest of the layers. I have such a turn around with buyers that I am constantly buying/selling/moving/butchering/etc. Our barn is a big barn, built in the early 1900's. It has the wooden pegs holding it together.

Sorry to ask so many questions-my main one is-do you have trouble integrating the new birds in with your existing flock? Or-is there so much space it is not an issue. BTW-I work for a retired dairy farmer that has a barn like you mentioned-I love sitting inside it and looking up-marveling at the handiwork that went into it so MANY years ago (and getting that "heady" feeling from smelling all of the rich hay we put up during hay-making season). Thanks again for all that you and Melissa have done...I really like this place. Regards, Mari

I haven't had much trouble. I have found adding them at night helps. It's like the chickens are too dumb to realize they have new companions!
